Chapter 47: Acceptance
The afternoon sun cast a golden glow over the café where Y/N sat, fingers tapping nervously on the table as they waited for Dua. It was surreal, this moment of finality-something they'd known was coming for a long time but had refused to fully accept. The doorbell chimed, and Y/N's heart skipped as Dua entered, her figure slender and poised, her expression calm yet melancholic. There was a quiet grace about her today, a sense of peace that seemed at odds with the weight of their meeting.
Dua walked over, offering Y/N a faint smile as she sat down. "Hey," she said softly.
Y/N swallowed hard, struggling to find their voice. "Hey..."
For a few moments, neither spoke. The silence felt heavy, but not unbearable. It was the kind of silence that settled when words had already done their work over the years, leaving only the final ones that needed to be said.
"I've signed the papers," Dua finally broke the quiet, pulling a folded document from her bag. She slid it across the table, her eyes searching Y/N's face.
Y/N stared at the papers, feeling the full weight of their meaning. "I... I don't know what to say."
Dua let out a small, bittersweet laugh. "You don't have to say anything, Y/N. We both knew this was coming. We've just been holding on... to something that's already gone."
Y/N's chest tightened. "I never wanted to hurt you, Dua. I swear, that was never my intention."
"I know," she replied gently, her gaze softening as it rested on Y/N's face. "And I don't blame you. I never have." She paused, taking a deep breath. "I've always known... deep down... that Elizabeth was the one. The one who had your heart first, the one who would always come first. And that's okay. I've had to come to terms with that."
Y/N shook their head, guilt swirling in their heart. "You deserve so much more than I ever gave you."
Dua's smile wavered for a moment, but she nodded. "Maybe... but we can't always control who we love. And I loved you, Y/N. I still do... but I love myself enough now to let you go. To let us go."
The lump in Y/N's throat made it hard to breathe. "I'm sorry, Dua. For everything."
Dua reached across the table, her hand warm as it wrapped around Y/N's. "I don't want you to be sorry anymore. I want you to be happy." She hesitated, her voice cracking slightly. "And I think... I think you'll only really be happy with her. Elizabeth."
The name hung in the air between them, unspoken for so long, now said with a quiet finality.
Y/N felt the tears pricking at the corners of their eyes. "I never meant for things to get this complicated..."
"I know," Dua whispered, giving their hand a squeeze before pulling away. "But life is messy. And love? It's even messier." She smiled, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "Go to her, Y/N. Be with her. You've always belonged to her."
The pain in Dua's words wasn't lost on Y/N, but there was also an undeniable truth. A truth they had fought for years. They had tried to bury their feelings for Elizabeth, had tried to build a life with Dua, but in the end, love wasn't something that could be forced or rewritten.
"I don't know how to thank you for this," Y/N whispered, voice thick with emotion. "You deserved better."
"Maybe," Dua replied softly, rising from her chair. "But I deserve someone who loves me completely. And you deserve to follow your heart." She picked up her bag, giving Y/N one last lingering look. "Goodbye, Y/N."
Y/N stood as well, their heart aching with the weight of the moment. "Goodbye, Dua."
And just like that, she walked away. Y/N watched her leave, feeling both an immense sadness and a strange sense of relief. The chapter with Dua was finally closed, and for the first time in years, Y/N felt like they could breathe again.
