Chapter 46: Unspoken Confessions (Elizabeth's POV)

Elizabeth lingered outside the door after her conversation with Y/N and Dua, her heart heavy with the weight of their shared past and the truth that had finally been acknowledged. The exchange with Dua had been more emotional than she had anticipated, but also necessary. She had always known that Y/N was the one she couldn't let go of, even if she tried.

As she stepped into her car, she couldn't shake the feeling that things were about to change-not just between her and Y/N, but for all of them. The ease between Y/N and Dua had always felt tenuous to her, a balancing act that couldn't last forever. And now, after the vulnerable conversation they'd had, Elizabeth sensed that the tipping point was near.

The engine roared to life, but Elizabeth sat still, gripping the steering wheel tightly as her mind raced. She had made peace with the fact that Y/N had moved on, or so she thought. But that nagging feeling, that flicker of hope she had buried deep within her, had been reignited the moment she saw Y/N with River-the way she interacted with her son, the way her eyes softened in ways they hadn't before. It was like Y/N had grown, but a part of her had always remained the same.

"She'll always be the love of my life," Elizabeth had told Dua. And the truth of that statement weighed heavily on her chest now.

Back when they were younger, Elizabeth had believed that love wasn't enough to hold them together. Life had torn them apart, but time had a funny way of softening the edges. Maybe if they had tried harder, maybe if they had fought for each other... things would have been different. Maybe they wouldn't be here, standing on the edge of something unresolved.

She hadn't expected to feel this way again. After all, she had come back into Y/N's life simply to reconnect, to see if they could make peace with their past. But the connection they shared had been so much more than that, so much deeper than she ever imagined. Each time she spent time with Y/N, it felt like a door had been reopened-a door she had thought was closed for good.

And then there was Dua.

Dua had been kind, understanding in ways Elizabeth hadn't expected. But underneath the calm exterior, Elizabeth could sense the uncertainty, the recognition that their situation wasn't sustainable. The way Dua had spoken, with quiet acceptance that Y/N would always hold Elizabeth close in her heart, made Elizabeth ache. She hadn't wanted to disrupt Y/N's life, but part of her couldn't help but wish-selfishly-that there was still room for her in it.

Maybe, Elizabeth thought, there always had been.

As she drove home, her mind wandered back to the moments they had shared-the laughter, the tears, the memories that had shaped them. Elizabeth realized, with a sharp pang of guilt, that she had never stopped wanting Y/N. She had tried to convince herself otherwise, but no matter how much time passed, she could never fully erase her feelings.

The thought terrified her.

She parked in front of her apartment, sitting in silence for a moment before finally stepping out. The night air was cool, but the storm inside her was anything but calm. As she walked toward her front door, Elizabeth's phone buzzed in her pocket.

It was a message from Y/N.

"Can we talk tomorrow? I think we need to."

Elizabeth's heart skipped a beat. She wasn't sure what Y/N wanted to say, but she had a feeling it would change everything.

Chapter 40: The Breaking Point (Elizabeth's POV)

The next day, Elizabeth arrived at Y/N's house with a mix of anticipation and dread. The message from Y/N had been cryptic, but Elizabeth knew this conversation would be pivotal. As she walked up the steps, her hands trembled, and she found herself hoping, for the first time in years, that maybe-just maybe-there was a chance for them to rewrite their story.

Y/N opened the door, her expression unreadable. Elizabeth stepped inside, and they moved to the living room, where the silence between them hung heavy. Elizabeth glanced around nervously before turning her attention back to Y/N, who was seated on the couch, looking down at her hands.

"I've been thinking about us," Y/N started, her voice quiet but firm. "About everything that's happened since you came back."

Elizabeth's breath caught in her throat, but she remained silent, waiting for Y/N to continue.

"I love Dua," Y/N said, her voice trembling slightly. "She's been so good to me. To River. But... something feels unresolved between us, Lizze. And I can't pretend that it's not there anymore."

Elizabeth felt her pulse quicken, but she didn't interrupt. Y/N's gaze finally met hers, and Elizabeth could see the conflict in her eyes.

"I never stopped caring about you," Y/N admitted. "And seeing you again after all this time... it's made me realize that maybe I never really moved on. Maybe I was just trying to."

Elizabeth swallowed hard, her heart racing. She had dreamed of hearing those words, but now that they were being spoken, she didn't know how to react.

"Y/N..." she began, her voice barely above a whisper.

But before she could continue, Y/N shook her head. "I'm not saying this to hurt Dua. She's been nothing but supportive. But I've realized that I can't keep living in this limbo-between my past and my present. I need to figure out what I really want."

Elizabeth's heart ached as she listened, knowing how difficult this must have been for Y/N to admit. "What do you want?" she asked softly, afraid of the answer but needing to hear it.

Y/N hesitated, her eyes filled with uncertainty. "I don't know," she whispered. "But I need to find out."

Elizabeth's chest tightened. She wanted to reach out, to take Y/N's hand, but she held back, unsure of whether that was what Y/N needed right now.

"I don't want to hurt anyone," Y/N said, her voice cracking. "But I also can't keep ignoring this part of me that still loves you."

Elizabeth felt a surge of emotions-hope, fear, guilt. She had been waiting for this moment for so long, but now that it was here, she didn't know how to process it.

"I've never stopped loving you," Elizabeth admitted, her voice thick with emotion. "And I know I was the one who left, but... I've always regretted it."

The room fell silent, both women grappling with the enormity of what had just been said. Elizabeth could see the pain in Y/N's eyes, the struggle to reconcile her feelings for Dua with the unresolved love she still held for Elizabeth.

Finally, Y/N spoke, her voice quiet but determined. "I think I need to talk to Dua. We need to figure out where we go from here."

Elizabeth nodded, knowing that this was the moment of truth. Y/N had to make a choice-one that would change everything. But for the first time in years, Elizabeth allowed herself to hope that maybe, just maybe, they could find their way back to each other.

And as she left Y/N's house that evening, she couldn't help but feel that the end of this chapter was only the beginning of something new.

This sets the stage for Y/N's internal struggle as well as Dua's eventual realization that Y/N's heart had never fully moved on from Elizabeth. The progression would involve Y/N grappling with her divided feelings, culminating in Dua's acceptance and eventual decision to let Y/N go, knowing Elizabeth had always been her true love.
