Chapter 40: Conversations Unfold

Post-Party Reflections

The remnants of River's party lingered in the air like the last notes of a forgotten song. Empty plates scattered across the table, colorful balloons drooped, and the sweet scent of cake mixed with the faint aroma of spilled soda. Y/N stood in the kitchen, staring out at the stars twinkling in the night sky, each one a reminder of her unfulfilled dreams and desires.

"Can we call Elizabeth?" River's voice broke through her thoughts, filled with childlike enthusiasm as he clutched his phone in one hand, his eyes sparkling with excitement.

Y/N felt a pang in her chest. She turned to face him, forcing a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "That's a great idea, sweetie. Let's thank her for coming."

As River dialed the number, the atmosphere shifted. Dua, who had been cleaning up the living room, paused and cast a glance toward Y/N. The darkness in her expression deepened, and Y/N felt a heaviness settle over her like a suffocating blanket.

"Hey, Liz!" River chirped into the phone, his voice ringing with joy. "Thanks for coming to my party! It was so fun!"

Y/N's heart raced as she listened to River's innocent chatter, her thoughts spiraling. Elizabeth. The name was like a siren song, calling to her, beckoning her back to a place she thought she had left behind. But how could she reconcile those feelings with the life she had built with Dua?

Dua's Confrontation

After the call ended, the house fell into an uncomfortable silence. Dua turned to Y/N, her expression unreadable. "Can we talk?"

"Of course," Y/N replied, bracing herself for what was to come.

Dua led her to the living room, where the dim light cast long shadows. The atmosphere felt charged, as if the very walls were listening. "I've been thinking..." Dua started, her voice trembling slightly. "I know you still have feelings for Elizabeth."

Y/N's heart sank. "Dua, I-"

"No, let me finish," Dua interjected, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "I've always known. It's like I've been sharing you with her, and it's not fair. I can't keep pretending everything is okay when it's not."

Y/N swallowed hard, her throat dry. "I love you, Dua. You know that."

"But do you love me the way you love her?" Dua asked, her voice breaking. "Every time you look at her, it's like I'm invisible. I can't keep living in the shadows of someone else's heart."

Y/N felt the weight of Dua's words crush her. "It's complicated," she whispered, tears welling in her eyes.

"Is it?" Dua's gaze bore into her, filled with a mix of hurt and anger. "Or is it just easier for you to ignore your feelings for her because you think it's the right thing to do? You have a family now, but your heart... it's still with her."

Y/N took a deep breath, feeling the walls of her reality begin to close in. "I never wanted to hurt you," she said, her voice barely a whisper.

"But you are," Dua replied, her frustration palpable. "Every time you push me away, every time I see you light up when you talk about her... it hurts, Y/N. I'm standing here, pouring my heart out, and all I can feel is this distance between us."

Deep Emotional Dialogue

"I'm sorry," Y/N said, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I'm torn. I care for you, but Elizabeth... she was my first love. There's a part of me that's always going to feel something for her."
