Chapter 24 – The Second Proposal

New York had a certain magic at night. The city lights flickered in the distance like distant stars, and the hum of life never truly faded, even in the quietest corners. But tonight, none of that mattered. Tonight, the world narrowed to just the two of them.

Dua had been acting suspicious all day. Y/N had noticed the secretive glances, the barely concealed smirks, and the hushed conversations when she thought Y/N wasn’t paying attention. Then there was the insistence on bringing Blue, their dog, for a nighttime drive—despite the freezing temperatures.

“You’ll love it,” Dua had said, gripping the steering wheel with barely contained excitement.

Y/N had merely raised an eyebrow but didn’t question it. Not when Dua looked that radiant.

Eventually, the car pulled up at a secluded beach just outside the city. Y/N’s breath caught in her throat the moment she stepped out onto the cool sand.

The setup before her was breathtaking.

Soft fairy lights were strung along wooden poles, casting a golden glow that danced across the sand. Small candles flickered around a picnic blanket, their gentle flames swaying with the ocean breeze. A chilled bottle of champagne sat nearby, two glasses already waiting. In the distance, the waves crashed softly, a rhythmic melody playing in time with Y/N’s heartbeat.

She turned to Dua, utterly speechless. “Dua… what is this?”

Dua bit her lip, her nerves suddenly showing. “It’s my turn.”

Before Y/N could ask what she meant, Dua was moving. With a deep breath, she sank onto one knee, reaching into her coat pocket.

Y/N’s heart nearly stopped.

A small, velvet box appeared in Dua’s hands, her fingers slightly trembling as she opened it. The ring inside sparkled under the fairy lights, elegant and timeless.

Y/N’s eyes widened, her breath catching in her throat.

Dua exhaled, her voice soft but sure. “You asked me first. And it was perfect. More perfect than I ever could have imagined. But I wanted to ask you, too. Because this isn’t just about you choosing me. This is about me choosing you. Every single day. Over and over again.”

A shaky breath left Y/N’s lips, her vision blurring as emotions swelled in her chest.

Dua swallowed hard, her voice thick with love. “I don’t want to just be your fiancée because you asked me. I want to be the one who asks, too. Because I know, with every fiber of my being, that you’re it for me.”

Y/N’s hands covered her mouth, her heart racing as the words sank in.

Dua took a deep breath, her gaze unwavering. “So, Y/N… will you marry me?”

The world around them fell away.

Y/N didn’t hear the waves anymore, didn’t feel the cold, didn’t see anything beyond the woman kneeling in front of her. The woman who had become her home, her safe space, her greatest adventure.

Tears spilled down her cheeks before she could stop them. She didn’t care.

She dropped to her knees in front of Dua, not caring about the cold sand beneath her. Her hands cupped Dua’s face, thumbs brushing over tear-streaked cheeks as she whispered, “Yes.”

Dua let out a breathless laugh, her own tears slipping down. Y/N barely gave her time to react before pulling her into a deep, love-filled kiss. It was desperate, overflowing with every ounce of emotion she couldn’t put into words. Dua melted into her, fingers tangling in Y/N’s coat as they held onto each other like they never wanted to let go.

A bark echoed through the night, breaking the moment.

They both pulled back, laughing breathlessly as Blue wagged his tail beside them, his excitement evident.

Y/N wiped at her face, shaking her head. “You planned all of this, didn’t you?”

Dua grinned, sniffling. “With a little help.” She gestured toward Blue, who promptly pressed his paw against Y/N’s leg, as if taking credit.

Y/N chuckled, ruffling the dog’s fur before looking back at Dua. Her Dua. The woman who had just proposed to her in the most beautiful way imaginable.

“Did you really think I’d say no?” Y/N teased, nudging Dua’s nose with hers.

Dua rolled her eyes, still smiling. “No. But I wanted to do this right. I wanted you to know that I’m all in, too.”

Y/N exhaled softly, their foreheads pressing together. “I already knew. But I love you even more for it.”

Dua smiled, lifting the ring from the box with trembling fingers. “Can I?”

Y/N held out her hand, and Dua slipped the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly, like it was meant to be there.

Like they were meant to be.

A shiver ran through Y/N, and Dua immediately pulled her into a hug, rubbing her arms for warmth.

“Okay,” Dua said, sniffling again. “Now that the hard part is over, can we celebrate with champagne and some actual food? I may or may not have ordered your favorite takeout, and it should be here any minute.”

Y/N laughed, leaning into her. “You really thought of everything, huh?”

Dua smirked, pressing a kiss to her temple. “Of course. You’re my fiancée, after all.”

Y/N’s heart soared at the word.

Fiancée.

Under the soft glow of candlelight, with the quiet crash of waves and the twinkle of city lights in the distance, they sealed their love with not just one, but two proposals.

Two hearts.
Two promises.
One forever.
