Chapter 22: "Facing the Truth"
The weight of Lizzie's decisions pressed down on her chest, and as the last echoes of Robbie's departure faded, a deep emptiness settled in her heart. She sat motionless, the silence in her room an oppressive reminder of what had just unfolded. The sadness was undeniable, but what gnawed at her more was the sharp sting of regret. She had spent so much of herself trying to hold onto something that was already slipping away, her fingers grasping at the illusion of happiness, when all along, she had been running from the one thing that truly mattered.
As she reflected on her relationship with Robbie, a truth that had been lurking in the back of her mind came crashing forward. She had hurt Y/N in much the same way Robbie had hurt her. The realization was like a slap to the face, and she couldn't escape it. For months, she'd clung to the idea of a love with Robbie, ignoring the fact that her heart had already been given to someone else. Y/N had been her person, the one who knew her better than anyone else, yet Lizzie had let her go, believing that something better was waiting just around the corner.
But now, that better thing felt hollow. Robbie’s betrayal was still fresh, but the weight of her own mistakes—her failure to recognize the love she already had—felt heavier than anything else.
Karma, she thought bitterly, her mind racing with the painful knowledge that she had hurt Y/N in exactly the same way Robbie had hurt her. She had been too scared, too caught up in the fantasy of what could be with Robbie, to see what was right in front of her. Now, that love—Y/N's love—was gone, and Lizzie had no one to blame but herself.
The guilt churned in her stomach, but in the midst of that chaos, a sense of urgency sparked inside her. She needed to do something. She needed to make it right, even if it was too late. With trembling hands, Lizzie reached for her phone and opened a new message. Her fingers hovered over the screen, unsure of how to start. But then, as the words began to flow, she knew exactly what she had to say.
---
Dear Y/N,
I can’t take back what I’ve done, and I know words can’t undo the pain I’ve caused you. But I need you to know how sorry I am. I should have fought for you. I should have chosen you, but instead, I pushed you away because I was afraid. I was afraid of what I couldn’t control, afraid of my own feelings, and I let the best thing that ever happened to me slip through my fingers.
You were my person. And I took that for granted. I can only hope that, in time, you can find it in your heart to forgive me.
You deserve so much more than what I gave you. I hope you find the happiness you deserve, whether I’m a part of it or not.
Take care of yourself.
With love,
Lizzie---
Lizzie hit "send" before she could second-guess herself. A small weight lifted from her chest, but it was quickly replaced by a flood of raw emotion. It wasn’t enough. She hadn’t said everything she needed to say. As she stared at the screen, the overwhelming sense of loss hit her harder than ever before.
Her hands were still shaking when she dialed her mother’s number. The phone rang twice before her mother’s voice filled the line. “Hello?” she asked, her tone warm and familiar.
“Mom,” Lizzie’s voice cracked, a sob escaping before she could hold it back. “I need you. Please come over.”
Within moments, her mother and sister arrived, and the moment Lizzie saw them, the floodgates opened. She collapsed into her mother’s arms, her tears soaking the fabric of her mother’s sweater.
