The Way I Am – Ingrid Michaelson 🎶💕
"If you were falling, then I would catch you."

The beach stretched endlessly before us, the golden light of the setting sun painting everything in warm hues. The waves rolled in gentle rhythms, their hushed whispers blending seamlessly with the faint rustling of the evening breeze. And beside me, Patrick's fingers intertwined with mine, solid and warm—a silent anchor grounding me in the moment.

Everything else? It faded into the background.

No whispers of the past. No anxious thoughts about the future. Just this.

We walked in sync, the cool water occasionally washing over our bare feet, leaving behind soft, foamy traces. It was peaceful, the kind of peace I hadn't felt in a long time.

After a while, Patrick gently tugged me toward a secluded spot where the waves barely touched the shore. He stopped, turning to face me, his expression soft yet mischievous—like he was teetering between something lighthearted and something much deeper.

"Kat," he murmured, his voice carrying over the waves.

I glanced up, my heart picking up speed at the way he was looking at me. "Yeah?"

Patrick reached up, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear. His fingers lingered against my skin, tracing a path from my cheek to my jaw, sending a slow, shivery warmth down my spine. His touch was light, reverent, like he was memorizing me in this moment.

"I'm really glad we're here," he said, his voice filled with so much meaning that it made my breath hitch.

"Me too," I whispered, barely aware of how close we had gotten.

The air shifted, charged with something undeniable.

For a second, neither of us moved. We just stood there, hearts racing in sync, caught between hesitation and inevitability.

Then, without warning, Patrick suddenly grinned—a playful, boyish grin that made my stomach flip for an entirely different reason.

Before I could process it, he poked my cheek, his eyes twinkling with mischief.

"What was that for?" I gasped, swatting his hand away.

"You were looking way too serious," he teased, biting back a laugh. "Had to break the tension before you got all emotional on me."

I rolled my eyes, but the smile tugging at my lips betrayed me. "I was not about to get emotional."

Patrick raised an eyebrow, obviously not buying it. "Oh, really?"

Before I could argue, he took off running—full-speed—straight into the shallow waves.

"Patrick!" I yelled, laughing despite myself.

"Catch me if you can, Carter!" he called back, kicking up water as he dashed further into the surf.

Oh. It was on.

I didn't even hesitate. I bolted after him, the cool water splashing up my legs as I tried to close the distance. Patrick had a head start, but what he didn't anticipate? My determination.

He turned slightly to check if I was still behind him—mistake.

I launched myself forward, grabbing the back of his shirt and pulling him toward me.

And with one final, perfectly timed step—

He tripped.

And we both went down.

Patrick let out a startled laugh as he stumbled into the water, the waves soaking his jeans while I collapsed beside him, completely breathless from laughter.

"Okay, okay!" He held up his hands in surrender, shaking water from his arms. "Truce! Truce!"

I smirked, flicking a few droplets at him. "Not so tough now, huh?"

Patrick grinned, pushing back his wet hair. "You're way too competitive."

I shrugged, hugging my knees to my chest as the waves lapped gently at our feet. "You started it."

He nudged my shoulder. "I regret nothing."

For a while, we just sat there, side by side, staring out at the ocean. The sky had shifted to shades of deep orange and soft pink, casting everything in an ethereal glow. The air smelled of salt and warmth, and the distant laughter of beachgoers made everything feel alive.

Patrick leaned back on his elbows, his gaze drifting toward me. "Favorite beach day ever?"

I thought about it for a second before grinning. "Definitely top five."

He gasped dramatically. "Top five?! Not even top three?"

I laughed. "Eh, maybe if you'd let me win that chase instead of making me take you down myself."

Patrick shook his head, chuckling. "Unbelievable. You tackle me into the ocean, and I'm the bad guy?"

"Pretty much," I said, popping the 'p'.

He huffed, rolling his eyes in defeat. "Fine. Next time, I'll let you win."

I turned my head toward him, raising a brow. "Next time?"

Patrick met my gaze, his expression softening just a little. "Yeah," he said, like it was the easiest thing in the world. "Next time."

I felt something warm settle in my chest.

For once, I didn't overthink it.

I just let myself be here, in this moment, beside him.

And for the first time in a long time, I felt completely at peace.
