People You Know – Selena Gomez 💔🎭
"We used to be close, but people can go from people you know to people you don't..."
----
The station buzzed with tension, thick enough to choke on. The fluorescent lights overhead flickered slightly, casting a harsh, sterile glow over everything.
My heart was hammering against my ribs, my breath shallow as I stood there, trapped in the middle of a storm I couldn't escape.
The worst part? My friends were being questioned.
Brailey and Vinita were the first to step forward, their usual confidence completely drained.
Brailey, who always had something to say, looked like she wanted to disappear. Her fingers were fidgeting, her shoulders hunched as she faced the officers.
"We didn't see anything," she mumbled, voice barely above a whisper. She hesitated before adding, "We just know that Olivia fell... but we don't know how it happened."
Vinita nodded way too fast. "Yeah, we weren't even with her when it happened. We were, like, outside, by the food stalls, right?" She shot the officer a nervous smile, her words rushed and uneven. "We don't know what happened on the rooftop."
Their words felt like a slap.
They weren't pointing fingers at me, but they weren't defending me either. And somehow, that stung even more.
They were scared, I got it.
No one wanted to be caught in the middle of this mess. But their hesitation, their subtle pull away from me, felt like watching cracks form in a bridge I thought was unbreakable.
Then it was Adri's turn.
I held my breath as she stepped forward. She looked at me first, and in that glance, I saw everything—her fear, her anger, but also something else. Something that made my chest tighten.
"Kat didn't do it," she said firmly, turning back to the officer. "She wouldn't push Olivia. Yeah, they argued, but she's not the type of person who would do something like that."
A weight lifted off my chest. Adri believed me. She knew me. If anyone could keep me from drowning in this nightmare, it was her.
But then, a voice cut through the air like a blade.
"Kat might have done it."
I froze.
The world tilted beneath me as I turned, my stomach twisting painfully.
My breath caught in my throat when my gaze met Alista's calm, unreadable face.
"What?" My voice barely made it out.
Alista shrugged, like she was casually discussing the weather. "You were angry, Kat. You've been pissed off for a while, especially about Olivia. It's not impossible that you just... snapped."
It felt like the floor had been ripped out from under me.
Alista.
Alista.
Someone I had laughed with, shared secrets with, trusted—just threw me under the bus without blinking.
Her words wrapped around my throat like a noose, squeezing tighter and tighter until I couldn't breathe.
"You think I pushed her?" My voice cracked, the disbelief making me shake.
She didn't even flinch. "I think you could have."
The words barely had time to settle before chaos erupted.
Mrs. Parker's shriek tore through the air. "She's a danger! She tried to kill my daughter!"
My father stepped forward, fists clenched at his sides, his face red with fury. "How dare you accuse my daughter of this with no proof?"
"She was the last person with Olivia!" Mr. Parker shot back, his face twisted in rage. "She was jealous of Olivia, and now look where we are!"
"You have no right—" my mom started, her voice trembling with emotion, but it was drowned out in the shouting.
My head was spinning. The walls of the station were closing in, the fluorescent lights too bright, the voices too loud.
Then I saw him.
Patrick.
Standing there. Watching everything unfold. Silent.
My heart clenched so hard it hurt.
I met his gaze, hoping for something—anything. A word, a gesture, a sign that he was on my side. That he believed me.
But he just stood there.
Didn't say a word.
Didn't even look at me properly.
It hit me like a punch to the gut.
His silence.
His refusal to speak up.
He wasn't stopping his parents as they spat venom at me, wasn't telling anyone they were wrong.
I felt sick.
Maybe... maybe he's disgusted too.
A lump formed in my throat, so thick it felt like I was choking on it. I had been holding onto this tiny, fragile hope that hewouldn't abandon me.
But standing there, seeing the hesitation in his eyes, I realized—maybe I wasn't just losing my freedom.
Maybe I was losing him, too.
Adri's hand landed on my shoulder, grounding me, but it wasn't enough to stop the spiral.
"Kat, we'll figure this out," she whispered, her voice steady. But even she sounded shaken.
I barely nodded, my entire body numb. I didn't hear much after that. Just muffled voices, angry accusations, and my own heartbeat pounding like a war drum in my ears.
Because the truth was settling in now, pressing against my ribs, suffocating me.
I was alone.
No one knew what had happened except Olivia. And until she woke up, there was nothing I could do to stop this storm from swallowing me whole.
