Two days after Y/n found out that her parents knew and were friends with Harry's parents, it was now time to board the Hogwarts Express and go back to school. Y/n had a somber goodbye with her mother, though the atmosphere between them hinted with awkwardness and tension. Now Y/n sits in one of the train compartments by herself looking out the window with a heavy sigh. But that didn't last long, a soft knock on the compartment door brings Y/n's attention away from the window. "Oh Hermione, hi." She feels a strange sense of happiness resonate inside of her at the sight of the bushy haired girl.

Hermione cleared her throat standing sheepishly in the doorway of the compartment, "Hey, mind if I join you?" She queried in a low, soft tone looking at the empty seat in front of Y/n.

"Not at all. Come, sit." Y/n put her hands out towards the seat in front of her, inviting her to take a seat. Hermione nods her head with a thankful smile before walking into the compartment and sits down in front of Y/n. "How uh... How was the rest of your holiday?" She asked, that sudden nervousness bubbling up again.

"Oh, it was nice. Though I have missed school." Hermione admitted sitting back in her seat. Y/n noticed her messing with something in her robe pocket.

"That doesn't surprise me even a bit." Y/n's tone drips with playfulness as she smiles over at her. In response Hermione just rolled her eyes, a small chuckle escaped her lips. Then an awkward silence fills the air of the train compartment. Hermione's gaze falls to her lap, her demeanor switching to a sheepish awkwardness. Y/n took notice and leaned forward, her eyes filled with curiosity at the sudden change. "Are you ok Hermione?"

Hermione looked up at her as if she had been caught doing something wrong. She cleared her throat and took a deep breath, "I actually need to talk to you about something."

"Oh ok, what is it?" Y/n queried with an underlying intrigue in her tone. Hermione stood up swiftly changing seats, now sitting beside Y/n who looked back at the girl confused.

Hermione reaches into her pocket and pulls out a small broach with a little otter holding a clam engraved in it. She held it in her hand, holding it towards Y/n whose eyes widened in surprise. "You... You opened my present for you." Y/n queried quietly, looking down at the broach in her hand.

"Yes..." Hermione nodded as she squeezed the broach in her hand. "Y/n I want to ask. How did you know that my favorite animal was an otter?" Her gaze lifted up meeting Y/n's, her eyes filled with curiosity and a hint of shyness.

"What? I-I had no idea." Y/n laughed awkwardly, denying any prior knowledge of what Hermione's favorite animal was.

"You suck at lying Y/n." Hermione huffed, glaring her eyes at Y/n. "Just tell me the truth. How did you know? I never told you that." Her tone was serious and stern as she continued her narrowing gaze at Y/n.

Y/n sighed, shifting her body to face more towards Hermione. "Ok, ok... It's just kind of embarrassing." She murmured, crossing her arms to her chest, her gaze averted from Hermione's now looking towards the window.

"I swear if you say you went through my notebook!" Hermione's voice surged in a sudden anger grabbing Y/n by the collar of her robe.

"Whoa hey no! I swear that's not where I got it from." Y/n exclaimed in a stuttered explanation, her arms shooting up in front of her in surrender. "I got it from when we were in our Muggle Studies class." She admitted keeping her hands in the air waiting for Hermione to let go of her robe.

"What?" Hermione's grip on her robe loosened a bit, causing Y/n to let out a small sigh of relief. "You peeked at my paper?" She gripped Y/n's robe once more, her breath catching in her throat half expecting Hermione to hit her.

"No! Just let me explain before angrily interrupting me, will you?" Y/n grumbled in dismay as Hermione held her anger filled gaze for a few moments. Then she let go of Y/n's robe and crossed her arms to her chest, keeping her gaze focused on Y/n. "Thank you. I didn't mean to see it ok? The professor asked me to hand you your paper that we had written about our favorite muggle animal. It was kind of hard to miss the word 'Otter' written at the top of your paper." She explained, trying to get it all out before Hermione gets angry again.

"I guess I can't blame you for that." Hermione sighed, her gaze softening at Y/n. "But why did you get me this with my favorite animal? How did you even do it?" Hermione furrowed her brows in confusion, her mind not being able to make sense of Y/n's kind gesture. "You have to admit we aren't exactly nice to each other."

Y/n's gaze fell down to her lap, a small tint of pink forming in her cheeks. "I got it for you as a peace offering. I was hoping it would mean we can start becoming friends..." She admitted in a shy mutter glancing up at Hermione every few seconds. "And I had some help... I asked Hagrid to go buy me something with an Otter on it while I watched Fang for him. I asked him to not mention it to anyone..." Y/n finished up her admission with a nervous chuckle, anticipating how Hermione will react to the information.

"Why... Why would you do that for me?" Hermione asked in a hushed tone, her eyes squinting in confused suspicion at Y/n.

"You can never have too many friends, right Granger? Y/n let out a chuckle, her tone teasing as she looked back at her. Y/n's face softened, her eyes noticing a hint of pink in Hermione's cheek. Hermione scoffed playfully trying to feign annoyance, but the small smile playing on her lips betrays her.

Y/n and Hermione walk toe in toe with each other into The Great Hall finally back at Hogwarts after two weeks away. The two girls both spot Harry and Ron sitting at the Gryffindor table, prompting them to hurry over to the two. Hermione and Y/n sat on the other side of the boys, sitting across the table from them. "Hey you two."

"Look who's here, together too." Ron hummed while nudging Harry's arm with his elbow while Harry just snickered in response.

"You two look awfully friendly sitting so close. Are you finally friends?" Harry queried, his gaze shifting between the girls.

Y/n and Hermione share a sheepish look with each other before their gazes snap back to Ron and Harry. "I... I think it's a start. She's not half bad I guess." Hermione retorted with a smug smile tugging at the corners of her lips.

"You're not so bad yourself, Hermione." Y/n quipped back, mirroring the smug smile on her lips looking over at Hermione. Ron and Harry snickered as Ron began coughing, obviously trying to cover up whatever he was saying. Y/n's gaze snapped over to the red-haired boy, narrowing her eyes at him. "Don't start already Weasley."

"Start with what?" Hermione raised a curious eyebrow looking between Y/n and Ron.

"Nothing. Just Ron being an idiot." Y/n snorted to which Ron responded with a simple eye roll. "Anyways, did you guys enjoy the holiday here at Hogwarts?"

"Yea it was nice to be away from the Dursley's. It wasn't too eventful though, right Ron?" Harry murmurs, nudging Ron's arm with his elbow.

"It was fun. Though Harry did find-" Ron started to say something when Harry nudged his arm with a little more force this time. "Bloody hell was that for Harry?" Ron looked over at him, an intense gaze coming from Harry causing Ron to gulp nervously. He snapped his attention to the girls who were watching the interaction curiously. "Harry's right, nothing too eventful." Ron nodded in agreement, as if confirming the statement.

"Uh ok..." Y/n states, not entirely convinced the boys are telling the truth about the holiday not being eventful for them. The boys go back to talking to each other no longer paying attention to Y/n and Hermione. "They are totally lying, aren't they?" Y/n leaned over whispering to Hermione who chuckles in response.

"Definitely." Hermione agreed looking over at the boys, the two left wondering what happened over the holiday break.
