Y/n takes a seat next to a fellow Gryffindor student and at the table behind Hermione. The students all stare at the front of the class attentively at a cat. The cat has a sense of familiarity, particularly around the eyes. Then the classroom doors burst open as Harry and Ron hurry into the room. "We made it!" Ron's exclamation turns the heads of the fellow classmates, Harry nods mirroring his sentiment. "Can you imagine old McGonagall's face if we were late first day out..."

The amusement shared between the boys was quickly interrupted by the sudden spectacle ahead of them. The cat, once set contently on the desk at the front of the desk leaps forward into the air. Transforming midair into none other than Professor McGonagall herself. The sudden transfiguration leaves both Harry and Ron gob smacked and staring in awe.

"That was bloody brilliant!" Ron exclaims, his voice filled with amazement and surprise, shared with many of the other students including Y/n. But McGonagall's response to his comment is laced with sarcasm.

"Yes, thank you for the assessment, Mr. Weasley." Her voice was dry and unamused by his exclamation. "But perhaps it might be more useful if I transfigured Mr. Potter or yourself into a pocket watch. That way one of you might be on time." She explains, her eyes shifting between Harry and Ron.

Her eyebrow quirks as Harry offers an explanation. His voice carrying a hint of earnestness, along with Ron who agrees almost synchronizing with Harry's.
"We got lost..."

"Then perhaps a map? I trust you don't need one to find your seats." McGonagall retorts, her voice laced with dry amusement. She motions for the boys to take their seats before turning away from them.

Harry and Ron slink passed Y/n, who can't help but let out a small chuckle. Ron looks over at her and whispers in a harsh tone, "Shut it Y/n." His tone unprovoked in Y/n's eyes as he walked past. Her eyes then meet Harry's whose gaze seems awkward and slightly hurt before he quickly looks away. She watches as the boys take their seats at the front of the class, under the watchful gaze of Professor McGonagall.

McGonagall then clears her throat, waiting for the class to settle, with her hands clasped together. Once the chatter of the first years slowly dies out, Professor McGonagall begins with her lesson. "Transfiguration is some of the most complex, dangerous and valuable magic you will learn at Hogwarts." She begins, walking to the other side of her desk and turning back towards the class once more. "Use it skillfully and it may, one day, save your life. Make a mistake and you could find yourself with a toad's head and a monkey's tail."

She reaches down and opens the textbook placed in the middle of her desk, "Alright then. Shall we begin?"

After Professor McGonagall's class is over, the students hurry out of the classroom, off to eat at the Great Hall. Y/n follows far behind her fellow students but is stopped in her tracks by Professor McGonagall's voice. "Ah Miss Black. Can you stay back for a moment? I'd like to have a word."

Y/n turns around slowly, anxious on why she is being asked to stay back. "Yes Professor." She walks cautiously over to the Professor's desk.

"Don't worry, you are not in any trouble, Miss Black." McGonagall's tone is calm with a hint of amusement as her face softens. Y/n nods silently in repose, letting out a sigh of relief that she's not in trouble. "I just want to make sure you are alright. You seemed distracted while I was teaching."

"Oh. I'm alright Professor. I'm sorry, I was listening to the lesson, I swear." Y/n begins, telling most of the truth. "I am just excited about this new school." She gives a short explanation not wanting to admit that she's already feeling overwhelmed by this school not even 24 hours into her arrival.

Professor McGonagall squints her eyes at the young girl, not quite believing her story. She chooses to trust that she is telling the truth for now. "Good, we don't want you falling behind. Now run along to the Hall with your fellow house members." She waves her hand dismissing young Y/n from her classroom.

"Thank you, Professor McGonagall." Y/n states quietly before bowing her head slightly before quickly exiting the classroom. She looks around the empty hallway, looking left to right, letting out a groan in frustration. "Damn. How do I get to the Great Hall from here?" She clicks her tongue trying to decide which way to go. She decides to go back towards the Gryffindor Common Room and figure it out from there.

As she embarks on this mini adventure to find the Great Hall, she tries asking anyone who happens to be walking around the halls. But any time she tried to ask for help they either ignored her or just scoffed and walked away. She curses under her breath clenching her jaw feeling helpless and frustrated. Then a voice snaps her out of her thoughts, "What... are you doing out here?" Y/n freezes in her tracks, her gaze slowly lifting to see Professor Snape standing over her, his presence menacing. "First years should be eating in the Great Hall as of now." He states, his voice monotone and dry.

Y/n finds herself nervously standing up straight gripping her books tightly to her chest as she fumbles an answer out. "P-Professor McGonagall asked me to stay behind! And I uh I can't s-seem to find where... the Great Hall is located." Her nervousness only heightens at Sapes vigilant gaze as she gives her explanation.

Professor Snape tutted unamused at her, "Come along Miss Black." He spins around, beginning to walk away. Y/n quickly follows in step after him, feeling a little embarrassed having one of the professors escorting her to The Great Hall. Finally, after an annoying amount of time getting to the hall, they have arrived. "I hope next time... you'll find your way by yourself." Snape retorts, his expression unreadable as he looks back at her.

"Yes sir. I will next time." Y/n nods her head to him watching as he walks away. She takes a step into the hall, feeling the gaze of other students watching her. Her embarrassment grew rapidly hearing a few snickers, more so from the Slytherin table. She makes her way to the Gryffindor table with her head hung low not wanting to draw any more attention to herself. Her eyes land on an open spot on the bench right next to Harry. "Mind if I sit here Harry?" She asks quietly hoping he'll agree.

Ron and Hermione look over at her, Rons mouth full of food while furrowing his brows at her. While Hermione scowls at her, her gaze burning holes into the side of Y/n's head. Harry however looks a bit more indifferent to her presence, "Sure, go ahead." He scoots over a bit, bumping into Ron who muffles an irritated grunt.

"Thank you." Y/n smiles, feeling a small sense of relief by his kindness even if it was mostly indifference. She quickly takes a seat next to Harry, and almost immediately makes herself a plate of food.

While Y/n begins eating her food, a scoff can be heard from Hermione a few seats over. "Can't you have sat anywhere else? I'm sure someone would let you sit." She sneers looking past both Ron and Harry to Y/n, her eyes narrowing back at her.

"I didn't ask you, did I Granger?" Y/n retorts looking away from the bushy haired girl back down to her plate of food taking another bite.

"I already have to sleep so close to you. Do you also have to sit near me too?" Hermione continues her complaining, which Y/n can't be arsed to give any kind of dramatic reaction. Another scoff escaped Hermione's lips, "Fine ignore me then. That way I don't have to hear your voice!" She huffs, turning her attention away from Y/n again.

Y/n looks over seeing Harry and Ron looking awkwardly from her to Hermione and then share a look. Not wanting to engage in any possible conflict she just continues eating her food quietly keeping to herself. After a couple of awkward minutes of silence, she listens as Harry and Ron go back to having their conversation.

Then as she finishes her food and as if on cue, it is time for her next class.

Potions, with Professor Snape.
