Chapter 13: Frail Body 13

The RV drove smoothly toward the school.

In the back seat, two high school students prepared for the day, eating breakfast as they rushed out the door, a typical scene of hurried morning routines.

“How did you hurt your hands?” Song Qie asked, glancing at Lu Beihuai, who sat beside him.

“I accidentally got injured while moving things,” Lu Beihuai replied nonchalantly.

Song Qie paused mid-bite, unable to finish the bread in his hand. He watched Lu Beihuai devour his breakfast in just a few bites, and then glanced back at his own half-eaten bread.

Useless thin dog, he thought, frustration creeping in.

His gaze shifted to Lu Beihuai’s arm, freshly wrapped in gauze that morning. The bandage appeared relatively clean, but he recalled the blood that had stained it earlier. Whatever had caused the injury must have been serious.

Then his eyes caught the bruises at the corners of Lu Beihuai's lips. What on earth is going on with him?

“Are you full?” Lu Beihuai asked, noticing that Song Qie had stopped chewing and was staring at him.

“I’m full,” Song Qie replied, though his gaze was still fixed on the gauze on Lu Beihuai's arm. He couldn’t help but ask, “What happened?”

Seeing that Song Qie had barely eaten more than half of his bread, Lu Beihuai mentally noted, Typical cat stomach, and reached out his hand. “Just give it to me when you’re done.”

“...Why? I’ve already eaten!” Song Qie protested, puzzled by the request.

Lu Beihuai regarded him with a hint of amusement. “You used to throw the food you couldn’t finish at me.”

Song Qie found himself momentarily speechless. What’s wrong with this ‘Song Qie’? he thought. So rude. This guy is nice to you, and you let him eat your leftovers? He placed the unfinished bread back on the tray in front of him, feeling a mix of irritation and reluctance.

“Don’t do this again,” he said firmly.

As soon as the words left his mouth, he watched in disbelief as Lu Beihuai reached over, snatched the half-eaten bread, and popped it into his mouth.

“…”

The tall boy sitting next to Song Qie had his hands resting on his knees, broad shoulders slightly hunched as he chewed on a piece of bread that had already been eaten by someone else. His expression was impassive, making it hard to tell whether he was happy or unhappy, but his hunger was evident.

Song Qie silently retracted the comment he was about to make. Forget it; this guy is impossible to deal with. He decided to let Lu Beihuai eat as he pleased. If he pushed too much, he’d only end up in a worse mood.

One loaf of bread is definitely not enough for him. This guy probably needs at least three! I’ll have Auntie make a few more tomorrow.

He opened his school bag, preparing to pull out the study notes he had organized the night before to give to Lu Beihuai.

“Master, do you hate me?” Lu Beihuai’s voice broke the silence.

“Um?”

“Last night…” Lu Beihuai swallowed his mouthful of bread before continuing, his gaze fixed on the floor. “You didn’t ask me what time I’d be back.”

The early morning sunlight streamed through the car window, casting warm light and shadows on Lu Beihuai. His tall figure suddenly looked vulnerable, head bowed in a way that made him seem almost emo and aggrieved, like a big dog in need of comfort.
