Chapter 16: Frail Body

Song Qie found himself trapped between the solid wall and the powerful grip of a man, feeling the heavy breath against his head. His legs felt weak, rendering him unable to move or even raise his gaze. Fear enveloped him.

He regretted spending the ticket money to attend this event. If he hadn’t been fooled by the man at the entrance, he wouldn’t have uncovered this unsettling secret. And it was no small secret; the man was a boxer.

Woo woo woo, I’m really afraid of getting beaten.

Suddenly, the person who had been holding him down collapsed.

Startled, Song Qie instinctively grabbed Lu Beihuai: “Hey…”

He’s so heavy!

Lu Beihuai’s eyes fluttered shut as he fell.

In that fleeting moment, all Song Qie could focus on was Lu Beihuai's face, which seemed on the verge of tears, but oddly enough, he didn’t feel particularly bad.

---

The atmosphere in the emergency room was frantic, filled with the sharp smell of disinfectant and the sound of anxious voices. Several patients lay on beds, waiting for treatment.

Song Qie sat on the edge of a bed, gently wiping Lu Beihuai's face with a wet tissue. After a severe nosebleed, he tossed the blood-stained tissues into the nearby trash can. Thankfully, only a cut marred the corner of Lu Beihuai’s mouth; had he taken a worse beating, he might have been disfigured.

As he wiped, Song Qie couldn’t help but frown. What a madman! It all clicked—the injuries he had witnessed recently, the strange scent of medicine lingering in the air at night; they were all connected to Lu Beihuai’s injuries.

“According to the CT results, there’s a slight cerebral hemorrhage. Fortunately, the bleeding is in the cerebral hemisphere, a relatively safe location. Clinically, there may be dizziness, but it shouldn't affect daily life. We recommend rest and avoiding strenuous exercise for the next one to two months.”

“A nose injury has caused the nosebleed, and I noticed multiple external injuries on his body—quite a few old ones, too.”

The emergency doctor put away his stethoscope and glanced at the pale-skinned boy with blood smeared on his cheek. He looked gentle and delicate, clearly worried as he sat beside the injured young man. The doctor then turned his gaze back to the taller boy on the bed. “Is this your brother?”

Song Qie, still processing the doctor’s report, responded dazedly, “...Well, I guess so.”

“Should I call the police?” The doctor assessed the injuries and added, “Your brother was beaten, right?”

“No, no! He’s a boxer. Thank you, doctor.” Song Qie quickly replied. He then turned to the now-comatose Lu Beihuai and asked, “Does he need to be hospitalized for observation?”

“It is recommended to stay for two days.”

“Not necessary.”

As if on cue, Lu Beihuai opened his eyes and struggled to sit up. Alarmed, Song Qie rushed to support him, frowning as he exclaimed, “What are you doing? You’ve sustained a brain hemorrhage!”

“I’ll just go home and rest.” Lu Beihuai felt dizzy as he sat up, closing his eyes to suppress the discomfort. When he opened them again, he fixed a dispassionate gaze on Song Qie.

His eyes scanned the bloodstains on Song Qie’s pale cheek.

When Lu Beihuai’s fierce gaze landed on him, Song Qie felt an involuntary shiver run down his spine. The depths of Lu Beihuai’s black, cold eyes stirred a primal fear within him.
