Chapter 29: Frail Body
In the evening, family members carrying thermal bags came in and out of the inpatient department, some pushing loved ones in wheelchairs toward the elevator. The flow of people was heavier than usual.
“Excuse me, please let me through for a moment.”
As soon as the elevator door opened, two wheelchairs approached, eager to enter.
Song Qie leaned against the elevator wall. Upon seeing someone enter, he quietly stepped back to make room for the patient in the wheelchair. However, as he took a step back, he felt his heels press against the shoes behind him. Suddenly, two big hands grasped his shoulders and gently moved him back, causing his back to touch a warm chest.
He noticed Lu Beihuai's protective gesture and turned to face him, smiling softly as he whispered, “Thank you.”
The elevator was crowded, with people standing shoulder to shoulder. As Song Qie leaned closer to speak, his lips inadvertently brushed against Lu Beihuai's ear, though it lasted only a moment.
“Stand still.” Lu Beihuai subtly shifted aside, placing a hand on Song Qie's slender shoulder while using the back of his hand to block the wheelchair handle next to them.
“Okay.” Song Qie nodded obediently.
Unbeknownst to him, the reflection in the elevator wall revealed Lu Beihuai's gaze fixated on his well-behaved and pretty profile, his brow slightly furrowed as he stared for an extended moment.
With a soft ding, the elevator arrived at the ICU floor.
Song Qie followed Lu Beihuai closely, watching as he approached the payment window. He provided his father’s ward number and name, handing over his ID and card to settle the bill.
“Lu Guo, right?” The nurse at the cashier counter glanced at Lu Beihuai through the window. “Do you have medical insurance?”
“Yes, I do.” Lu Beihuai replied.
The nurse printed the bill and stamped it with a seal. “Including previous fees, your total is 367,000 yuan.”
Song Qie's eyes widened in shock. He quickly grabbed Lu Beihuai's arm, careful not to hurt him, and exclaimed, “That’s a huge amount!”
“It’s been over a month. The daily costs are in the tens of thousands, and many imported medicines aren't reimbursed,” Lu Beihuai explained, unfazed by the total. He had saved some money from being a sparring partner at the boxing gym and from working for the Song family over the past six months.
He still owed 200,000 yuan to Song Qie's father.
After taking the list from the nurse, he headed toward the intensive care unit.
“Did the doctor say when my father might leave the ICU?” Song Qie asked, noting Lu Beihuai’s neutral expression. He had learned to discern his moods by now.
“Maybe in a few days,” Lu Beihuai said, catching Song Qie's worried glance. “Are you nervous?”
“How could I not be? This is your father,” Song Qie replied, concern evident in his voice.
Lu Beihuai studied him for a moment before turning away, walking toward the ward with the list in hand.
As they approached, Song Qie followed closely, but he felt a tightness in his chest and struggled to keep pace. He frowned, rubbing his chest. Why did he feel so breathless and uncomfortable?
Noticing this from the corner of his eye, Lu Beihuai slowed his pace.
In front of the ICU, the attending physician, Doctor Liu, stepped out.
