i'll spend forever wondering
if you knew.
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───the room is dimly lit, just the soft hum of the streetlights filtering through the curtains. billie's lying beside me on the bed, scrolling through her phone, her hair messy, her hoodie oversized and falling off one shoulder. we've spent hours like this, barely talking, just existing in the same space. it's comfortable, the kind of silence that doesn't need filling.
but tonight, something feels different. there's this unspoken tension between us, like the air is charged. i catch her glancing at me from the corner of her eye, like she's waiting for me to say something. i've been holding back for a while, unsure of how to put into words what's been rattling around in my head.
"you alright?" she finally asks, her voice low, casual, but there's a curiosity there. she knows something's up.
i nod, but it's a half-hearted gesture. i don't really know how to say what i'm feeling without sounding too intense, too much. so instead, i just say, "yeah. just thinking."
she turns her phone off, tossing it onto the bed between us. "about what?"
i run my fingers over the edge of the blanket, tracing the lines in the fabric. "about us. about... wanting more." the words are out before i can stop them, and i feel my chest tighten, waiting for her reaction.
billie shifts, propping herself up on one elbow, her eyes narrowing slightly. "what do you mean, more?"
i let out a slow breath, choosing my words carefully. "i wanna be more for you. not just someone who's around, but... everything. the one you can lean on. the one who's there, no matter what."
her expression softens, but she doesn't say anything right away. she's thinking, and i can see the gears turning behind her eyes. billie's always been the type to take her time, to weigh everything out before she speaks. and i've always liked that about her.
after a beat, she smirks, the corner of her mouth twitching up like she's amused by my sudden burst of honesty. "you already are, you know?"
i shrug. "maybe. but i want it to be clear. no guessing, no in-between."
there's a silence that follows, heavy but not uncomfortable. she reaches over, her hand brushing mine, her fingers lingering there for just a second longer than necessary. "i get that," she says quietly, her eyes meeting mine. "i want that too."
it's not a grand declaration. there's no big dramatic moment. just two people sitting in the dark, figuring it out one piece at a time. and somehow, that feels more real.
she shifts closer, closing the space between us until her head is resting on my shoulder. "you don't need to try so hard to be everything," she murmurs. "you already are what i need."
i don't respond. i don't have to. instead, i just reach for her hand, holding it firmly but without making a big deal out of it. the night goes on, and we just sit there, together, in the kind of silence that says more than words ever could.
