i'll spend forever wondering
if you knew.
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───billie's smile lingered for a moment, and then, just like that, she was walking toward me through the crowd. my heart raced, a million thoughts swirling in my mind, but i couldn't move. i couldn't look away.
before i knew it, she was standing in front of me, her smile a little hesitant now, like she wasn't sure how i'd react.
"evelyn," she said, her voice soft, almost tentative, like we were back on those swings all of those years ago.
"hey, billie," i replied, trying to keep my voice steady despite the flood of emotions crashing over me.
for a second, it was quiet. just the two of us, the noise of the award show fading into the background. it was like we were suspended in time, back in the familiar comfort of our shared past, even though so much had changed.
"it's been a long time," she said, looking down for a moment before meeting my eyes again. there was something in her gaze—something i hadn't seen since we were teenagers. a flicker of the connection we used to have.
"yeah," i nodded, feeling the weight of all those years between us. "it really has."
we both stood there, neither of us knowing what to say. there was so much unspoken between us—questions, regrets, unfulfilled promises. i wanted to ask her why she ghosted me, why she disappeared from my life when i needed her the most. but instead, i said, "how have you been?"
billie let out a small laugh, the sound a little awkward but familiar. "good. busy, you know. and you... i mean, look at you, you've been killing it."
i shrugged, trying to downplay the nerves that were creeping up. "i guess. just trying to figure it all out."
she glanced around the room, then back at me, her eyes softening. "i'm really proud of you, evelyn. i've been listening to your music, and... you've come a long way."
her words caught me off guard, and for a moment, i wasn't sure how to respond. "thanks," i said, my voice quieter than i intended.
there was another beat of silence before she spoke again, her voice almost hesitant. "i missed you."
those three words hit me harder than i expected. i swallowed hard, trying to keep my emotions in check. "i missed you too, billie."
we stood there, the years of separation hanging heavy between us, but somehow, the weight didn't feel as crushing as it once did. she took a step closer, and i felt my heart lurch in my chest. it was as if the universe had given us this moment, this chance to reconnect after everything.
"wanna get a drink or something? catch up a little?" she asked, the hint of a smile playing at her lips.
i hesitated for only a second before nodding. "yeah, i'd like that."
as we made our way through the crowd, toward the bar where the after-party was in full swing, i couldn't help but feel like the universe was giving us a second chance. we found a quiet corner, away from the flashing lights and cameras, and sat down.
for the rest of the night, we talked—about the years we missed, about music, life, everything in between. there was still so much unsaid, but we didn't need to say everything that night. just being there with her, laughing and reminiscing, felt like the first step toward something more.
as the party buzzed around us, i realized that maybe some things didn't need closure, didn't need perfect endings. maybe all we needed was this—a chance to be in each other's lives again.

i was enchanted to meet you.
