Chapter 36

Later that evening, as Y/N was winding down from the eventful day, her phone pinged with a notification. It was a message from Elizabeth.

Hey, I've been thinking... Would River like some Hattie Harmony merch? I can send over a few things if you're okay with it.

Y/N smiled at the text, picturing River's reaction. He was already obsessed with the book, and anything related to Hattie Harmony would probably make his day. She quickly typed back.

That would be amazing. He would love it. Thanks, Lizze.

Within moments, Elizabeth responded with a heart emoji, followed by a list of items she had in mind: a plush toy, a few shirts, and some stickers. Y/N couldn't help but feel grateful. It was a thoughtful gesture, and it spoke volumes about Elizabeth's desire to stay connected, even in this small way.

A few days later, a neatly wrapped package arrived at Y/N's doorstep. River was in the living room, playing with Bluey, when Y/N brought the box inside. She carefully set it down and called out to her son.

"River! Look what came in the mail for you."

His tiny head popped up, eyes wide with excitement. "Mail? For me, Mama?"

Y/N nodded, crouching down to his level as he toddled over, his small hands reaching out to touch the box. "Yeah, remember your friend 'Wizze'? She sent you something special."

River's face lit up with pure joy at the mention of Elizabeth. "Wizze! Hattie?"

"Yep, let's see what's inside," Y/N said, helping him open the package. River's eyes grew even wider as he pulled out a soft Hattie Harmony plush toy, hugging it tightly to his chest.

"Hattie!" he squealed, his voice full of excitement.

Y/N grinned as she pulled out a few shirts, including one that had Hattie Harmony's face on it and another with a cute design of the book's characters. She showed them to River, who immediately reached for one of the shirts. "I wear! I wear now, Mama!"

"Okay, okay, let's get you changed," Y/N laughed, swapping his current shirt for the new one. Once he was dressed, River ran around the living room, showing off his new clothes to Bluey and Oscar, as if the dogs would appreciate it.

"Look, Bluey! Hattie!"

Y/N chuckled, snapping a quick picture of River in his new shirt, clutching the Hattie plush toy. She quickly sent it to Elizabeth with a simple caption: Someone's a little excited! Thank you again, he loves it.

Elizabeth replied almost immediately. He looks adorable! I'm so glad he likes it.

Y/N sat back on the couch, watching as River continued to parade around, his happiness infectious. Moments like these, simple and filled with joy, made everything feel a little easier. There was still a lot to process, but seeing River so happy made the complexities of their adult relationships fade into the background, if only for a moment.

Later that night, as Y/N tucked River into bed, he hugged his Hattie plush close, his sleepy eyes blinking up at her. "Mama... Wizze is nice. I like Wizze."

Y/N's heart melted at his innocent words. "She is nice, baby. She's very nice."

River yawned, his voice soft as he drifted off. "Hattie's my friend... just like Wizze."

Y/N gently stroked his hair, her voice barely above a whisper. "Yeah, just like Wizze."

As she watched River fall asleep, holding onto his new plush, Y/N felt a sense of peace. Maybe, just maybe, things could work out for all of them. They had their own paths now, but it didn't mean they couldn't still care for each other in small, meaningful ways-like sending a little boy his favorite character to make him smile.
