Fracture
The car speeds through the night, sirens fading into the distance. I cling to Mystro's arm, my head rests on his shoulder. My eyes fixed on the rearview mirror for the longest, searching for Kevaun's car.
Exhaustion and worry overwhelm me. I shut my eyes, forcing myself to trust. A ringtone distrubs the silence, Essien clearing his throat before picking the call.
He speaks lowly.
Not bothering to eavesdrop, I allow my mind to drift to my child. I really need a hug from her right now..
The car finally approaches our estate and I'm a little bit relieved. I notice Kiehlani's room light on.
"Who's there with Kiehlani?" I question the security. "Your mother. She came before Don left."
I nod.
I missed my mother. This is a great opportunity to spend some time with her. I open the front door with my key.
"Please let me know when Kevaun is here. I'll be in Kiehlani's room." I tell them when we enter.
Essien nods, giving me an unfamiliar look before going to sit on the couch.
Mystro moves off to the backyard after, lighting up a spliff.
I trudge up the stairs, my legs heavy with fatigue. I push open our bedroom door, hurrying to the bathroom to shower.
My thoughts run wild.
I sigh.
Putting on one of Kevaun's t-shirts, I make my way to Kiehlani's room. I'll speak to my mother later on, I already know she's by the pool.
Reaching my daughter's room, I gently push open the door.
"Hey baby," I whisper, smiling.
She's covered in her pink sheets, her bratz dolls scatter the place. I smile, grateful she's innocent and untouched by this chaos.
I approach her bed, my heart swelling with love. Her peaceful expression soothes my frazzled nerves.
"Mommy's home," I gently brush a strand of her hair from her face.
Kiehlani stirs, opening sleepy eyes.
"Mommy!" She squeals, throwing her arms around me. I inhale her sweet scent, hugging her tight.
"Let's watch Frozen?" I ask her, lifting her in my arms as I make my way to Kevaun's and I bedroom.
I pick up a few chocolates on the way there.Kiehlani giggles, snuggling into my chest. We settle into the bed, chocolates and snacks within reach. I wrap my arms around her, holding her close.
"Mommy missed you so much." I say, mostly to myself.
As Frozen plays, I cherish this peaceful with my daughter.Just then, my mother enters the room. My eyes shifts to her. I smile, watching as she comes to my side of the bed. "Watch mi two baby dem. Come mi snuggle up too," I laugh.
