The city lights cast a soft, flickering glow on the pavement as Ethan and Zane walked side by side, making their way back to Ethan's apartment. The cool night air wrapped around them, carrying a quiet sense of tranquility. It felt like one of those rare moments when they could simply be themselves-no heroes, no villains, just Ethan and Zane.
Ethan glanced at Zane, a small, content smile tugging at his lips. It was strange, being so close yet still hiding. He couldn't deny how good it felt to have these moments with Zane, though-a kind of stolen bliss amidst the chaos of their lives.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Ethan asked softly, his gaze lingering on Zane's face. "After what happened with Asher, I mean."
Zane smirked, shrugging casually. "I've faced worse. Besides, he didn't even throw a punch. I think I got off pretty easy."
Ethan rolled his eyes but couldn't suppress the chuckle that escaped his lips. "Yeah, well, don't get too cocky. You might not be so lucky next time."
"I'm always lucky," Zane teased, his voice dropping to a playful murmur. "After all, I have you."
Ethan's cheeks warmed at the words, and he quickly looked away, focusing on the street ahead. He didn't know how Zane managed to say things like that so easily, without a hint of hesitation or embarrassment. It was infuriatingly charming.
But just as he was about to respond, a figure caught his eye.
"Wait, is that-?" Ethan's voice faltered, his heart suddenly hammering in his chest as he spotted a familiar silhouette up ahead.
It was Asher.
The hero was standing on the corner of the street, his back turned as he glanced down at his phone. Ethan's stomach twisted in panic, and he instinctively took a step back, his mind racing with a dozen worst-case scenarios.
"What's he doing here?" Ethan whispered frantically, his voice barely audible. "Oh god, if he sees us together, he'll-"
Before Ethan could finish his sentence, he felt a strong hand wrap around his arm, pulling him sharply to the side.
"Shh, just move," Zane muttered, his voice low and urgent as he dragged Ethan into a narrow alleyway, shrouded in darkness. He pressed Ethan against the cold brick wall, his body blocking him from view as he leaned in close. "Stay still and stay quiet."
Ethan's breath caught in his throat, his heart pounding wildly. The alley was dark, shadows pooling around them like a protective veil. Zane's proximity was overwhelming, his scent and warmth wrapping around Ethan, but all Ethan could think about was the fact that Asher was just a few feet away.
"Zane, what are we-?"
"Shh." Zane placed a finger to his lips, his eyes locking onto Ethan's. "He won't see us if we stay hidden."
Ethan nodded shakily, swallowing down the lump of anxiety in his throat. He could hear Asher's footsteps, the faint sound of his voice as he spoke into his phone. Ethan strained to catch the words, but they were muffled by the distance.
"Shit," Ethan muttered under his breath. "This is bad. Really bad."
"Relax," Zane whispered, his tone soothing yet firm. "We're fine. He's not going to see us."
Ethan opened his mouth to argue, but Zane's hand was suddenly on his cheek, gently tilting his head up. "Ethan, look at me."
The command in Zane's voice made Ethan obey instinctively. His gaze met Zane's, and he found himself momentarily lost in the intensity of those dark, unwavering eyes.
"Breathe," Zane murmured softly. "Everything's okay. I won't let him see us, alright?"
Ethan hesitated, then nodded slowly, drawing in a shaky breath. He wasn't sure how Zane could stay so calm, but somehow, it made the panic in his chest ease just a little.
They stood there in silence, the only sound the faint murmur of the city around them. Asher's figure moved out of view, his footsteps growing softer as he turned and walked in the opposite direction. Ethan strained to hear, his heart still racing, until finally, the sound faded away completely.
Zane's shoulders relaxed, and he let out a soft exhale. "See? Told you we'd be fine."
Ethan sagged against the wall, relief flooding through him. "You... you're insane, you know that?"
"Probably," Zane said with a grin, not denying it. He leaned back slightly, giving Ethan some space, but didn't move away completely. "But you like it."
"Like hell I do," Ethan muttered, but the smile on his lips betrayed his words. "I thought we were caught for sure."
"Not a chance," Zane replied confidently. He glanced back at the street, making sure it was clear, then looked back at Ethan. "Come on, let's get out of here before your buddy decides to make a U-turn."
Ethan nodded, pushing off the wall and taking a steadying breath. But as they stepped out of the alley, he couldn't help but glance at Zane, his mind still reeling from the close call.
"Why did you...?" Ethan began hesitantly, his voice trailing off as he tried to find the right words. "Why didn't you just walk away?"
Zane arched an eyebrow, giving him an incredulous look. "Walk away? And leave you to face him alone? Yeah, no thanks."
Ethan shook his head, frustration and something warmer, deeper, swirling inside him. "Zane, you didn't have to-"
"I did," Zane interrupted, his voice soft but resolute. "I'm not going to leave you, Ethan. Not like that. I know you think I'm reckless, but I'm not that reckless."
Ethan stared at him, his chest tightening at the sincerity in Zane's voice. It was moments like these-unexpected, genuine-that made him feel like maybe, just maybe, this crazy, complicated thing between them could actually work.
"Thank you," Ethan murmured, his gaze dropping to the ground. "For... staying."
Zane's smile was gentle, almost tender. "Anytime, beautiful."
They continued walking, the tension slowly easing as they left the alley and the close encounter behind. But even as the distance between them and Asher grew, Ethan couldn't shake the lingering sense of unease. He knew this was just a temporary reprieve. Sooner or later, Asher would find out, and then...
"Stop worrying," Zane murmured, his voice breaking through Ethan's thoughts. "We'll deal with it when it happens. For now, let's just get back to your place."
Ethan glanced at him, surprised by the calm certainty in his tone. "You make it sound so easy."
"Because it is," Zane said with a shrug. "We've already come this far, haven't we? A little more won't kill us."
Ethan shook his head, a reluctant smile tugging at his lips. "You really are impossible, you know that?"
"And yet, you're still here," Zane teased, echoing his words from earlier.
"Yeah, well... someone's got to keep you in line," Ethan muttered, but the warmth in his voice gave him away.
"Then I guess I'm in good hands," Zane replied softly.
They continued walking, the city stretching out around them like a labyrinth of secrets and possibilities. As they turned down the familiar street that led to Ethan's apartment, Zane glanced at Ethan out of the corner of his eye.
"So, how long do you think we have before your knight in shining armor figures it out?" he asked, his tone light and teasing.
Ethan groaned, rolling his eyes. "Don't remind me. He's going to lose his mind when he does."
"Mm, probably," Zane agreed. He reached out, his fingers brushing lightly against Ethan's. "But until then... let's just enjoy the quiet, okay?"
Ethan glanced down at their hands, his heart fluttering in his chest. "Yeah," he whispered. "Let's."
And for the rest of the walk, they stayed like that-close, connected, and content in the fleeting moment of peace they had carved out for themselves.
