The tension in the air was palpable as Ethan and Asher arrived back at the base, the familiar sight of the old warehouse doing little to soothe the turmoil churning inside Ethan. He could feel the remnants of Callum’s blood on his skin, a heavy reminder of the choice he had made. Asher strode ahead of him, anger radiating from his every pore, fists clenched at his sides.
“What were you thinking, Ethan?” Asher erupted as they stepped inside, his voice echoing off the metal walls. “You just killed a guy! You’re not some vigilante judge, jury, and executioner!”
Ethan flinched at the words, the reality of what he had done crashing over him like a cold wave. “I didn’t have a choice, Asher! He would have killed us!”
“You could have brought him in! You could have restrained him!” Asher shot back, his voice rising with each word. “But you didn’t—you just… you just killed him! You’ve crossed a line you can’t uncross!”
Jonah, who had been leaning against a wall, listening to the exchange unfold, looked up, confusion written all over his face. “What’s going on? What happened?”
Asher rounded on Jonah, his frustration bubbling over. “Ethan killed Callum! He just… he just lost it!”
Jonah's brow furrowed, his gaze darting between the two of them. “What do you mean he killed Callum? Why would he do that?”
Ethan swallowed hard, the weight of his actions pressing down on him as he took a step forward, trying to find the right words. “It was a trap,” he began, voice shaky. “We were sent to capture a criminal, and Callum was… he was a threat. I tried to reason with him, but… it turned into a fight. I couldn’t let him escape. He would have killed us.”
“Ethan, you can’t just kill someone!” Asher yelled, throwing his hands up in exasperation. “You think this is some kind of game? You think you can just play hero and make these decisions?”
“I’m not trying to play hero!” Ethan shot back, the crisis within him boiling over. “I did what I had to do to protect us! I thought that’s what we were doing!”
“By killing him?” Asher’s voice dripped with disbelief. “Do you think that’s what a hero does? Do you think that’s what we stand for?”
Jonah stepped in, a frustrated expression on his face. “Can you both just calm down for a second?” he interjected, crossing his arms. “Ethan, I need you to explain what happened, like, really explain it. Asher, stop yelling—this isn’t helping.”
Ethan took a deep breath, trying to steady the whirlwind of emotions inside him. “Look, we were in a room, and it was a trap. Callum and I… we started fighting, and I just lost control. I didn’t mean to kill him, but he was—he was going to hurt us. I had to make a choice.”
Asher shook his head, anger still radiating from him. “You had options, Ethan! You could have incapacitated him! You could have brought him back to the base! But instead, you chose to end his life!”
“I know!” Ethan snapped, the frustration spilling over. “I know I could have done things differently! But in that moment, all I could think about was keeping you safe! You were the only thing that mattered!”
Jonah frowned, looking between the two of them, sensing the fissures forming in their relationship. “Asher, stop it. Yelling at Ethan isn’t going to change what happened. You need to understand that he didn’t act out of malice. He acted out of instinct.”
“Instinct?” Asher scoffed, disbelief clear in his voice. “What does that even mean? He could have killed anyone! What if Callum had been innocent?”
“He wasn’t innocent!” Ethan yelled back, the anguish spilling out of him. “He was a threat! And you know it! I don’t regret what I did. Not when it meant protecting you!”
Jonah’s expression turned serious, frustration leaking into his voice. “Ethan did what he thought was necessary, Asher. You can’t just dismiss that. He was in a life-or-death situation!”
“Life-or-death situation?” Asher retorted, voice rising again. “What if this happens again? What if Ethan decides to kill the next person who challenges him? Is that what we’re going to do now? Become murderers?”
Ethan’s heart sank at the accusation, the words striking deep. “I’m not a murderer!” he shouted, voice trembling. “I’m just trying to survive!”
“You need to control yourself!” Asher insisted, his voice a mixture of anger and concern. “We can’t have someone like you on our team if you can’t keep your head in check!”
Jonah stepped closer to Ethan, putting a hand on his shoulder. “That’s enough, Asher. You’re pushing him away. You’re not being rational.”
“I’m not being rational?” Asher shot back, disbelief flooding his voice. “This isn’t just some small mistake! This is serious! Ethan needs to understand the gravity of what he’s done!”
Ethan stood in silence, a storm of emotions swirling within him. He could feel the cracks forming in their camaraderie, the weight of guilt and regret mixing with the fury he felt toward Callum. “I know I messed up,” he finally said, his voice quieter. “But I didn’t have a choice. I didn’t want to kill him, but I didn’t want to die either. And I won’t apologize for trying to protect us.”
Jonah’s expression softened as he glanced between the two of them. “Ethan, it’s okay to feel conflicted. What happened was terrible, but you did it to keep yourself and Asher safe. Asher, you need to realize that Ethan is still our friend, no matter what happened.”
Asher’s shoulders slumped slightly, the tension in his body easing ever so slightly. “I just… I just don’t want to see him turn into something he’s not. I don’t want to lose him to this darkness.”
Ethan took a shaky breath, the weight of their words pressing down on him. “I’m still me, Asher. I’m still fighting for us. I just… I just need time to process all of this.”
Asher’s expression softened, guilt flickering in his eyes. “I’m sorry, Ethan. I shouldn’t have yelled. I just don’t know what to do. I don’t want this to change you.”
Jonah stepped between them, a hand raised as if to quell the tension. “We’re a team. We’ll figure this out together. But right now, we need to focus on what’s next. We can’t let Callum’s death define us or tear us apart.”
Ethan nodded, relief flooding through him as he felt Jonah’s support grounding him. “You’re right,” he said, voice steadying. “I’ll figure this out. I just… I can’t do it alone.”
Asher sighed, running a hand through his hair. “We’re in this together, Ethan. But you need to promise me that you’ll talk to us. You can’t just bottle this up.”
“I promise,” Ethan said, his voice barely above a whisper. “I’ll try.”
As they stood there, the weight of the situation still lingering, Ethan couldn’t shake the feeling of dread that settled in his stomach. He had crossed a line, and no matter how much they tried to move forward, he knew the shadows of that night would always linger at the edges of his consciousness.
“Let’s take a moment,” Jonah suggested, breaking the silence. “We all need to process what’s happened. But we can’t lose sight of why we’re here. We have to stay focused.”
Ethan nodded, grateful for Jonah’s steady presence. Asher sighed, the weight of their earlier argument lingering in the air, but the tension had eased slightly. They were still a team, still bonded by their shared purpose.
For now, they had to navigate the storm ahead together.
