Three days had passed since Ethan and Jonah’s heart-to-heart. In the interim, Ethan had struggled to reconcile the laughter and warmth of that evening with the heavy burden still weighing on his heart. Seeking solace, he found himself wandering far from the bustling city, drawn to a quiet park where the noise of life felt miles away.
The sun hung high in the sky, casting a warm glow over the sprawling green grass. Ethan sat on a weathered bench, a stray puppy nestled at his feet, its soft fur brushing against his leg. The puppy, a scruffy little thing with floppy ears and big, hopeful eyes, had appeared out of nowhere, and Ethan couldn’t resist its charms. He tossed a stick across the grass, and the pup bounded after it, tail wagging furiously as it brought the stick back, dropping it triumphantly at Ethan’s feet.
“Good boy!” Ethan laughed, the sound of his own voice surprising him after days of silence. He picked up the stick and threw it again, the puppy racing off with glee. In that moment, the world felt lighter, if only briefly. The innocence of the puppy, its unfiltered joy, was a balm to Ethan’s weary soul.
But as the puppy returned once more, the reality of his own tumultuous thoughts crashed back in. He tossed the stick again, watching as the puppy darted off, and sighed deeply. Despite the fleeting happiness the pup brought him, shadows still lingered at the edges of his mind, reminding him of the chaos that had ensued only days before.
Ethan took a moment to breathe, closing his eyes against the sunlight. He felt a warm breeze on his face, and for a moment, he allowed himself to just *be*. But it wasn’t long before the serenity was shattered by the sound of a voice he hadn’t expected.
“Ethan?”
He opened his eyes to see Zane standing a few feet away, the sun casting a halo around him, making it hard to decipher the expression on his face. Ethan’s heart raced, a mix of emotions swirling within him—surprise, apprehension, and the all-too-familiar sting of betrayal.
“Zane,” Ethan replied, his tone guarded as he stood, clutching the stick in his hand. The puppy, sensing the shift in energy, nestled closer to Ethan, almost as if it could feel the tension between the two young men.
Zane stepped forward, his brow furrowing with concern. “Hey, I didn’t expect to find you here. I was just—” He hesitated, as if searching for the right words. “I wanted to see how you were doing.”
Ethan felt a surge of anger and hurt at Zane’s casual tone. How he was doing? The question felt loaded with implications. He took a deep breath, fighting the urge to retreat into silence. “I’m fine,” he said flatly, not wanting to delve into the mess that was his life right now.
Zane’s eyes searched Ethan’s, and he took another step closer, his hands stuffed into his pockets. “Look, I know things were… complicated after what happened at the building. I just want to make sure you’re okay.”
“Why do you care?” Ethan shot back, his voice sharper than he intended. The puppy whined, sensing the tension and nudging Ethan’s leg, urging him to play.
“I care because you matter,” Zane said earnestly, his gaze unwavering. “I may not have handled things the best way, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to check in on you. I… I should have done more.”
Ethan wanted to ignore him, to turn away and let the moment slip into silence. But he couldn’t shake the gratitude he felt for Zane’s presence during the chaos of the shooting. Instead, he hesitated, looking down at the puppy at his feet. “Thanks for… being there, I guess,” he said reluctantly, the words feeling heavy on his tongue.
Zane’s expression softened, a flicker of relief crossing his face. “Of course. I just wish I could have done something more. I should have—”
“Should have what?” Ethan interrupted, his frustration bubbling to the surface. “Used me again? You did what you thought was best at the time. Just… stop pretending you can fix everything. You can’t.”
The air hung thick with tension, and Zane seemed taken aback by Ethan’s outburst. “I know I messed up, but I’m trying to make things right. I don’t want you to feel like you were just a tool in this.”
Ethan’s heart raced, emotions swirling within him. The hurt from Zane’s past actions felt fresh, and the lingering feelings of betrayal clawed at his mind. “You don’t get it, do you? You used me, Zane. I thought you cared, but I was just another pawn in your game.”
Zane’s expression hardened for a moment before he stepped closer, lowering his voice. “I know I hurt you, and I’m sorry for that. But I want to be better. I want to be someone you can trust. Can you give me a chance to prove that?”
Ethan hesitated, the puppy tugging at his pant leg, oblivious to the heavy conversation unfolding. “I don’t know if I can,” he admitted, the vulnerability in his voice surprising him. “It’s just… hard.”
Zane nodded, his shoulders sagging slightly as if the weight of the world rested on them. “I get it. I’ll give you space, but just know that I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk. No pressure. Just… don’t shut me out completely, okay?”
Ethan looked into Zane’s eyes, searching for sincerity, and found it—albeit wrapped in uncertainty. “Okay,” he said finally, the word feeling fragile.
Zane managed a small smile, the tension between them beginning to ease. “Thanks. That’s all I ask.”
Ethan nodded, his heart still heavy but a little less burdened. As Zane took a step back, the stray puppy barked playfully, breaking the tension.
“Looks like you’ve found yourself a new friend,” Zane remarked, watching the puppy bounce around.
“Yeah, I guess I have,” Ethan said, the corners of his lips twitching upward.
“Maybe I should get a puppy,” Zane said, half-joking, as he glanced back at Ethan. “It might help with the whole not being alone thing.”
Ethan chuckled softly, the momentary levity brightening the atmosphere. “Just be prepared for a lot of chaos. They don’t come with an instruction manual.”
“I’m up for the challenge,” Zane replied, the warmth returning to his smile. “But seriously, Ethan, I hope we can work on this. I want to be there for you—no strings attached.”
As Ethan watched Zane walk away, a part of him felt lighter. The shadows still loomed in his mind, but perhaps, just perhaps, there was room for healing. With the stray puppy by his side, he took a deep breath, allowing the warmth of the sun to wash over him.
For the first time in days, Ethan felt a flicker of hope. The journey ahead was uncertain, but in that moment, he wasn’t alone.
The sound of the puppy’s playful yips filled the air, and as Ethan tossed the stick once more, he let the moment carry him away, if only for a little while.
