The world outside the warehouse was cold, the night air biting against Ethan’s skin as he and Asher made their way back to headquarters. Asher hadn’t spoken much since the escape, but Ethan could feel the frustration radiating off him in waves. It wasn’t like Asher to lose control, and Ethan knew that something about the encounter with Zane had shaken him—perhaps more than either of them wanted to admit.
But for Ethan, it was something else that unsettled him, a confusion that had been gnawing at him for weeks, now made sharper by Zane’s presence. Where does my loyalty really lie?
The answer should have been simple. His loyalty was to Asher. Asher had saved him, trained him, given him purpose. Ethan had always known his place—by Asher’s side, fighting for justice, fighting against the darkness that Zane represented.
And yet…
Ethan’s thoughts churned as they stepped into the quiet halls of Asher’s headquarters. He barely noticed as Asher locked the doors behind them, his broad shoulders tense with frustration.
"You were off tonight," Asher finally said, his voice sharp as a blade.
Ethan winced. "I know, I—"
"No," Asher cut him off, turning to face him, his expression hard. "This isn’t like you, Ethan. I need to know what’s going on."
Ethan opened his mouth to respond, but the words stuck in his throat. How could he explain it? How could he tell Asher that, for reasons he couldn’t understand, Zane had gotten under his skin? That the enemy—the villain—had somehow made him feel strange, like there was a part of himself that came alive under Zane’s piercing gaze?
"It’s nothing," Ethan lied, his voice thin. "I’m just… I don’t know, maybe I’m tired."
Asher narrowed his eyes, clearly unconvinced. "You’re not telling me everything. You hesitated back there—when Void was right in front of us. You froze. That’s not like you."
Ethan swallowed hard, looking away. "I won’t let it happen again."
There was a long, uncomfortable silence, and Ethan could feel Asher’s eyes on him, sharp and probing. Then Asher sighed, running a hand through his short, dark hair.
"Ethan," he said, softer now, "I need you to be honest with me. We’re a team, and I can’t afford to have you doubting yourself—especially not when Void’s involved."
Ethan’s heart sank. Asher was right, of course. They were a team. They always had been. But the growing weight in Ethan’s chest made it harder and harder to believe that things could stay that simple.
"I’m not doubting myself," Ethan muttered, though the words sounded hollow even to him. "I’m with you, Asher. Always."
Asher studied him for a moment longer before nodding, though there was still a hint of doubt in his eyes. "Alright. Just… don’t let him get in your head, Ethan. Void is dangerous. He manipulates people—gets them to question things they shouldn’t. You can’t let him do that to you."
Ethan forced a smile. "I won’t."
But as Asher turned away, heading toward the control room to assess the damage done to their mission, Ethan couldn’t shake the gnawing feeling in his gut.
Zane was in his head. The way he had looked at Ethan back in the warehouse, the way his words had sliced through all of Ethan’s defenses—it felt like a spark that had ignited something Ethan didn’t even realize had been there. Something that had been building for longer than he wanted to admit.
You’re not like him. You don’t belong on his side.
No… Ethan didn’t like Zane. Zane was a villain—cruel, cunning, and manipulative. And yet, the intensity of his gaze, the way he seemed to see straight through Ethan… it made something in Ethan twist uncomfortably. As if Zane had peeled back a layer Ethan didn’t even know existed, leaving him exposed and vulnerable.

Zane’s POV
The night air was cool against Zane’s skin as he slipped through the back alleys, the chaos of the confrontation still buzzing in his veins. He moved with the precision of a predator, his mind replaying every detail of the evening.
It wasn’t the skirmish itself that had his thoughts racing. It was Ethan.
He hadn’t expected to encounter Asher’s sidekick, much less to have such an unexpected reaction to him. Ethan had always been a minor player in Zane’s eyes—a pawn to be moved, used if necessary, but ultimately expendable. But tonight, something had shifted.
When Zane had looked into Ethan’s eyes, he hadn’t seen the blind loyalty or unwavering determination he’d expected from Asher’s protégé. Instead, he’d glimpsed doubt. Confusion. And that, more than anything, had caught his attention.
A smile curled at Zane’s lips as he came to a stop at the edge of the empty street, his mind racing with possibilities. There was potential in that doubt. A crack in the armor that surrounded Ethan’s sense of purpose. One that Zane could exploit.
*If Ethan could be made to question Asher, even for a moment…*
The possibilities were endless.
Slowly, Zane leaned against the cold brick wall, his eyes narrowing in thought. He had known from the beginning that taking down Asher wouldn’t be easy. The so-called hero was unshakable, a force of righteous willpower that would never waver. But Ethan…
Ethan was different. He was young, idealistic. He wanted to believe in something good, something right—but he didn’t have the same blind faith Asher did. There was uncertainty there, a crack in his otherwise solid foundation. And if Zane could widen that crack…
He could break Ethan. And if he broke Ethan, Asher would crumble soon after.
Zane pushed himself off the wall, his gaze distant, calculating. The idea had merit. He would have to approach it carefully, of course. Ethan would be a delicate puzzle to solve, but one Zane felt more than capable of handling.
Yes… He could see it now. Each step, each move. Ethan, unwittingly drawn closer and closer to the darkness, until the lines between good and evil blurred beyond recognition.
And then, when the time was right…
Zane’s smile widened, sharp and predatory. I’ll take him from Asher. Piece by piece.
With that thought, Zane turned and melted back into the shadows, a sense of anticipation curling through him.
Ethan would be the key. And Zane had never been one to leave a key unused.
