Lyra is actually toby's half sister. Same father, different mother. Lyra's mother died about an hour after giving birth to her, she lost alot of blood and the doctors and nurse took too long to come to her aid. Toby's mother was a lady he already knew and since he had no idea on how to raise a kid, she helped him. Then when Lyra was about 3 they got married, then out popped tobias.
Now, neither parent told Lyra that her real mother died. They planned to keep it like that, but unfortunately Lyra found out. She confronted her father and Toby's mother, she was pissed that they lied to her and had no thought of telling her the truth. She left the house to blow off the steam and toby followed after her, which led to the accident that took lyra's life.
