Pedro's POV
As I stood in front of the latest product of Hydela Motors, I was beyond proud. The Hydela G30 truck was an absolute beauty to behold. And best of all, I was able to get the prototype done long before the deadline. Let's just say I drowned myself in work just to distract myself from thinking about a certain green eyed boy which wasn't in the least easy. Especially with him on the design team for the Hydela G30. And if not that I was trying to ignore my personal grievances and keep everything professional, I would have taken him off the team. And probably to another floor on the building. Maybe to customer care. Just thinking about him was a persistent source of annoyance but what irked me the most was why I was angry. Basically no reason. He didn't do anything wrong.
He was in a relationship and it was not supposed to make me feel anyway.
I don't date afterall.
"Are you ready?" Shanice asked dragging me out of my riverie. She was smiling sheepishly obviously more excited than I was. "The road is less busy by this time of the day, so you can test out the speed"
"I know Shanice" I replied walking to the car, my annoyance clear in my voice. She trod behind me and got into the passenger seat and without another word, I drove out of the garage unto the free highway to test-drive the new ride. The engineers had outdone themselves because soon I was flying around the city, all thoughts of everything and everyone gone. I didn't even care when Shanice loudly cheered when we ran the red lights. We were stopped a few times by the cops but luckily I was influencial enough to get off with a warning each time.
Half an hour later, I was driving back into the garage and turning off the engine.
"Should I schedule a meeting with the board to inform them that the first G30 is ready and tested?" Shanice asked immediately the engine died.
"No" I answered
"But...."
"Schedule a meeting with the head engineer instead. 30mins from now, my office"
"The board has to see, test and approve the G30 before we do anything else"
I was at the point were if I didn't hold myself back, I would have actually hit her. Shanice worked hard. Maybe too hard. She was always making it look like she cared about my company more than I did. I appreciated her care and concern but then she knew how to annoy me to my wits end.
"Sometimes I wonder who owns this company, you or me" I said through clenched teeth, piercing her with a gaze that could melt ice. I turned to walk away before she spoke again.
"But..."
I turned around so fast, I got lightheaded for a few seconds. I retraced the five steps I had taken in two and Shanice shrunk by a few inches when I got back to her, eyes blazing and close enough to taste her fright.
"Say 'but' one more time, I dare you" I gritted in a low voice that spoke volumes in warning. She didn't say another word and just stood, shivering. I held her glazed gaze for a few more seconds before walking away again towards the elevator. I was alone in the elevator for a short while before it opened again on the second floor and the one person I have vehemently tried to avoid was standing, waiting to get in. He froze immediately he saw me and I could see him trying to think fast, trying to decide whether to get in or wait for the next. He had a half eaten apple in his right hand and a bottle of water in the left. It was obvious that he had just had lunch. I glanced around at the scanty cafeteria. They were few people around still having lunch. Two guys began to walk towards the elevator. One was fat and sweaty and was wiping his wet palms on his brown trousers and then the other one look like a human version of ratatouille. One thing was certain though, I didn't want to share the elevator with them.
"Are you going to get in or what?" I asked frowning. The impatience in my voice must have helped him decide. He got in and the door shut just as the two weird looking men got to it. I made a mental note to find out if I had actually employed those two. I could feel how tense Marco was even without looking at him. I even found it amusing how he seemed to be breathing gently as if to prevent me from hearing it.
It was three months since that night at my place. Three months I had tried to stay mad at him. Three months I had totally avoided him and willing myself to see him only when necessary and with a lot of other people in the room. But here I was, the only thought in my head, to pin him to the walls of the elevator and kiss him till he gets the memo of how much I had missed him. The elevator ride was painfully slow and it was taking all my willpower to not turn and look at him. It was soon broken when I heard a loud bite, a muffled cough and a full force choking cough. I turned to see Marco red like he was about to explode. The now almost finished apple and the bottle of water were now on the floor and his hands were on his throat. He was struggling to breathe. I must have acted out of impulse or a force I couldn't fathom at the moment but before I could think straight, I was behind him, arms around his stomach, pushing as hard as I could till the piece of apple that had been blocking his wind pipe flew out of his mouth and landed a few feet away.
"Are you okay?" I asked as he slumped tiredly into my arms, the color returning to his face. I could hear the worry in my own voice and in that moment I didn't even care. "Are you alright?" I asked again when he didn't say anything.
"Ye..yes" he replied weakly trying to stand up now and from the way he was squirming in my hands, trying to get away from me. In that instant, I remembered why I was mad at him in the first place causing me to let him go immediately, stand up, straighten my suit and walk back to my side of the elevator.
"Maybe next time try and chew properly or better still, don't take in more than your throat can handle" I said before realizing that sentence may be interpreted to mean other things. I did well to sound as irritated as I felt though. He was silent for a while before he spoke again.
"I didn't need your help"
"It's not like 'Marco Alvarez, employee at Hydela Motors dead after choking on a piece of apple in the presence of Pedro McFarland, his boss' would make a good headline" I replied dryly and if I listened carefully, I would have heard him snort a small laugh.
The elevator doors finally opened and I was all too happy to get away from him. It was beginning to look like it was all drama whenever I was around him and heavens knew I was tired of drama.
