Yeonjun gently tapped Y/N's head and said, "Take Jungkook inside. You'll catch a cold."
Y/N immediately shot him a fiery glare. She had already argued with Yeonjun earlier that morning. Her voice laced with frustration, she replied, "You don't have to worry about me."
"Who's worried about you? Your boyfriend should be. That dumbass of a boyfriend of yours," Yeonjun retorted.
Y/N's eyes widened in surprise. Her voice sharp with indignation, she snapped, "Why, are you jealous?"
"Not at all. Jealous of you? Oh God, never! I haven't fallen that low," Yeonjun replied with exaggerated exasperation.
"You might be. I have a romantic relationship, and you don't. How sad!" Y/N teased with a smirk.
Yeonjun puffed out his chest in exaggerated confidence and declared, "I'll have one too, someday."
"In your dreams."
"No, really. Soon, I'll bring my binnie as my bride," Yeonjun announced with certainty.
That statement pierced Y/N's heart. Something broke deep within her. Invisible red liquid seemed to trickle down inside her soul. Only Y/N could feel the intense, defiant emotions stirring. A thin, forced smile crept across her lips, and then she flashed her teeth and said, "We'll all be waiting eagerly for Soobin brother-in-law."
Not a second passed before Y/N took Jungkook's hand and headed inside. Staying there any longer would have meant facing two kinds of pain. Before she could soothe the agony forming within her, she would have had to witness Yeonjun's face reflecting the longing for Soobin, whom he had yet to have. That was another unbearable pain for Y/N. Yeonjun's sadness created deep wounds in her tender heart-wounds that never seemed to heal. She wasn't sure if they ever would. But the day Yeonjun finally got the fierce boy named Soobin, she would smile from her heart. She would be free from the sorrow of Yeonjun's unfulfilled longing.
To Y/N, love meant this: sacrifice, separation, and sharing happiness. She had never imagined love without it. After her mother passed away, Y/N had jokingly asked her father, "Shall I get you remarried, dad?"
While gently stroking her hair, her father, Daehyung, had replied, "If you had asked me that in my youth, the answer would still have been a clear 'No.' Even now, the answer is 'No.' After losing your mother, I gave my heart to her alone. That heart was never returned. I had only one heart, and I gave it to her. What would I give to another? Love is for one person, with another, it's only compromise."
Y/N remembered those words vividly. She had given her heart too, solely for Yeonjun. But Yeonjun had given his heart to Soobin. Y/N would be willing to live in compromise, but she wished for Yeonjun's life to be full of intense love.
Jungkook had been quietly observing everything for a while. As Y/N led him inside the mansion, he asked in a soft voice, "Who is Soobin, noona?"
Y/N let out a small sigh, trying hard not to let her emotions show on her face. Explaining the complexities of love and heartbreak to someone as innocent as Jungkook, who hadn't yet fully understood such feelings, seemed almost unfair. She wanted his life to be full of spring and sunshine, free from such burdens.
