It was the final night before everyone left training camp, alcohol was snuck onto the campus and everyone was meeting up at midnight for the leaving party.
"Whatchu gonna wear?" Yamaguchi asked Kageyama in Karasuno's room.
Kageyama blinked and pointed at his outfit, "This."
Raising an eyebrow, Yamaguchi shook his head and rifled through his bag, "You are not wearing that. Don't you wanna look cute for Shoyō?"
"Uh no. I don't." Kageyama scoffed.
"Sure you don't," Yamaguchi giggled, "Try this on with some jeans." he said, throwing the taller boy a distressed denim jacket.
"Thanks." Kageyama nodded.
Yamaguchi POV:
I went back to looking through my bag, but for something I could wear.
Who do I even want to look good for anyway? This thing with Suna was most certainly over.
I settled on some baggy jeans and a black, slightly cropped, tank top, I didn't really pack effectively.
Tsukki walked into the room.
Out of instinct, I turned to him- forgetting that I was annoyed at him.
He looked at me and then turned around, "Sorry, you're changing."
I shrugged, "Nothing you haven't seen before." as I pulled the tank top on.
"Can we talk later?" He asked me.
"Sure." I responded, I hated arguing with Tsukki- it felt like that's all we did during this training camp.
A few others came into the room and started chatting about the bottles they brought, Tanaka was particularly proud.
"This wine is 60 years old you know." He said in a matter-of-factly manner.
"Yuck." Hinata responded, which made everyone laugh.
Ennoshita turned to me, "You look so cool Yamaguchi."
"You sure? It's not too much?" I asked, suddenly feeling a little self-conscious.
"Not at all." He confirmed.
"Thanks." I nodded.
"Let's freaking get this show on the road!!" Nishinoya hollered.
With that, the atmosphere in the room shifted. Excitement buzzed in the air as everyone began to gather their things. The excitement of the last night of training camp felt electric, and the whispers of laughter and plans filled the small space.
Yamaguchi caught Tsukishima's gaze briefly as he moved around the room, talking to Kageyama about the best way to sneak out without getting caught. There was an unspoken tension between them, they still hadn't spoken properly.
"Are you coming or what?" Tsukishima called over his shoulder, breaking Yamaguchi out of his thoughts.
"Yeah yeah, I'm coming." Yamaguchi replied, shoving his phone into his pocket. He felt a rush of nervous energy surge through him, fueled by the idea of a night out with his friends and the possibilities that lay ahead.
As they headed out of the dorm, the group became more boisterous. Tanaka led the charge, bouncing on his heels, while Sugawara entertained everyone with stories of previous parties. Hinata walked beside Yamaguchi, practically vibrating with enthusiasm.
"Are you excited?" Hinata asked, a grin plastered on his face.
"Yeah, I guess," Yamaguchi replied, though he felt a pang of uncertainty. The thought of Suna lingered in the back of his mind, a bittersweet reminder of their previous encounter.
When they reached the meeting spot, they found a secluded area outside, lit only by the faint glow of fairy lights. The sound of laughter and chatter filled the air. Several members from both Aoba Johsai and Inarizaki were already there, lounging around and enjoying their drinks.
"Look who decided to join!" Oikawa shouted, throwing an arm around Yamaguchi.
The atmosphere felt charged, and Yamaguchi could see Suna across the yard, leaning against a tree with a cigarette in hand, surrounded by a few of his teammates. Their eyes met for a brief moment, and Yamaguchi felt a flutter in his chest. He quickly looked away, focusing instead on pouring himself a drink.
"Let's do a toast!" Tanaka yelled, raising his red cup high. "To the best training camp ever!"
Everyone echoed the sentiment, and Yamaguchi found himself smiling as they all clinked glasses. The alcohol warmed him from the inside out, loosening the tightness in his chest.
As the night progressed, Yamaguchi tried to enjoy himself, but he couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. Suna's gaze lingered on him, sending warmth flooding through him and making it hard to concentrate on anything else.
"Earth to Tadashi!" Kageyama said, waving a hand in front of his face. "You good?"
"Yeah, just...thinking," Yamaguchi replied, trying to sound casual.
"About Suna?" Kageyama pressed, raising an eyebrow.
"No! I mean- maybe?" Yamaguchi stammered. "I don't know. It's complicated."
"Complicated?" Kageyama repeated, sounding skeptical. "You either like him or you don't."
"I don't like him," Yamaguchi insisted, though the words felt hollow.
"Sure," Ennoshita said, joining the conversation. "Just admit you want to kiss him."
"Maybe I do!" Yamaguchi shot back, surprising himself with the admission. The alcohol was clearly loosening his tongue.
Before Ennoshita could respond, Hinata interrupted, pulling Yamaguchi into a group that had formed around the fire pit. They played a game of truth or dare, laughter filling the air as each person shared embarrassing stories or completed silly dares.
Yamaguchi felt a little lighter, the energy of his teammates and friends pushed aside the anxiety that swirled in his mind.
"Okay, Tadashi! Truth or dare?" Hinata asked, eyes shining with mischief.
"Uhh, truth?" Yamaguchi replied hesitantly.
"Do you have a crush on anyone here?" Hinata grinned, clearly anticipating the juicy gossip that was to follow.
Yamaguchi's heart raced. He glanced over at Suna, who was laughing with his teammates, and then back at Hinata.
The pressure of everyone's eyes on him felt suffocating. "Um...well..."
"C'mon! You have to answer!" Kuroo chimed in, leaning closer.
"Fine! I might...like someone." Yamaguchi finally admitted, the words tumbling out before he could stop them, he immediately regretted opening his mouth.
"Who?" the group chorused, leaning in eagerly.
Yamaguchi swallowed hard, glancing at Suna again, who was now looking in their direction. "I...might like Suna."
The group erupted into laughter and teasing, but all Yamaguchi could focus on was the way Suna's expression shifted, a curious look crossing his face. He felt exposed and vulnerable under the scrutiny of his friends, but there was something liberating about finally admitting it out loud.
"Looks like someone has a crush!" Terushima shouted, a wicked grin plastered on his face.
"Shut up!" Yamaguchi yelled, but inside, he felt a rush of exhilaration.
As the night continued, Yamaguchi caught Suna's gaze again, and this time, instead of looking away, he held it. He wasn't sure what tomorrow would bring or where things with Suna would go, but for the first time in a while, he felt hopeful.
Maybe this night would change everything.
