Nika muhlI woke up a few hours later Violet still cuddled up fast asleep in my arms. I knew dinner was going to be ready shortly but I don't want to wake her. Me and Violet have been on good terms. But I still feel so much guilt. All she wanted was to be loved and I was two timing her.
I have never felt like more of a horrible person than when Azzi told me how I hurt her. The way she cried when she left my dorm that day. All I know is that I want Violet. All I can hope for is that she will want me back after what I did to her.
I gently brushed stray pieces of hair away from her face as I watched her sleep peacefully. I was caught off guard when I heard my door swing open loudly. "Dinner is ready." Hana said in a loud enough voice to wake Violet. Who startled against my chest.
"Oh my god I am so sorry. I didn't know you were asleep." Hans said holding a hand over her mouth. "No no your fine I'm starving anyway." She said playing it off. Violet hates to be woken up. But she also wants my family to like her really bad. I smiled at her as she sat up sleepily. She stretched and yawned as I got up from the bed going to my desk and picking up a hair brush.
I came back over to my bed sitting behind Violet now as she was moving to get off the bed. I gently brushed through her long blonde hair before pulling it back into a bun. She hates having her hair in her face when she eats. And she always has the worst bed head after she wakes up.
"What are we having for dinner." She asked as we walked down the stairs together and I could smell my mom's home cooked meal from a mile away. "Lamb peka. It like slow roasted lamb and potatoes and vegetables." I said explaining it to her. "It sounds delicious and smells delicious." She said as we made our way into the dinning room where my mom and Hana had set the table seeing as my dad has been cooking it all afternoon.
We sat down and dug in. I watched Violet carefully. She's no where near a picky eater but I always like to see how Americans react to the dishes I grew up eating. She took a few bites before she whipped her mouth and looked to my father. "This is delicious." She complimented. My father smiled widely. "We always love to share our culture. I'm glad you like it." My father's accent is thick but his English has definitely improved since me and Hana are both fluent in both English and Croatian.
"So what are you studying Violet?" My mother asked. Violet quickly swallowed before she answered. "I'm going to school to be a professor. I plan on working at a news paper while I finish my degree online." She said that sparkle in her eyes appearing as it always does when she talks about writing. "So what do you really want to do?" Hana asked.
"I want to write. I love to read and I love literature but I think in my dream world I would write books for a living." She said smiling widely.
After dinner we were all sitting on the couch watching Christmas movies. "What's your favorite Christmas cookie?" Violet turned to me and asked. "We only ever make sugar." I said which made her gasp loudly. "What?" I said confused. "You've never had like shortbread. Or thumbprint. Or crinkle cookies?" She said sounding concerned.
"No but those all sound amazing." Hana chimed in. "They are shortbread aren't very sweet but they're so buttery and good. And thumbprint is like an oatmeal shortbread with an icing in the middle. And crinkle there chocolate or red velvet and you roll them in powdered sugar." She said making me hungry for something sweet.
"We should make some." Hana said excitedly. "I like your thinking." Violet responded before they walked towards the kitchen. I followed on there trail taking a seat at the kitchen island and watching the way the ran around searching for ingredients.
They ended up deciding to make red velvet crinkle cookies after seeing the ingredients that we had in the house. They got to work giggling and talking as they worked around the kitchen. Hana told her about all the things we do as a family durning Christmas time and all her favorite Places here in Croatia. And Violet listened intently like I hadn't gave her the same exact run down on the plane ride here.
Hana told her about basketball as she's playing at Ball state university this year as a freshman. Violet told Hana how she loves to watch basketball especially watching me play. "You would enjoy watching me much more than nika I'm so much better than her." Hana joked waving a careless hand in my direction.
"Oh as if. I'm so gonna kick your ass when we play in February." I said faking offense knowing Hana is joking. "Nika language!" My mother shouted from the other room. "Yea nika language." Violet said sassily smirking at me. "I miss when I could say curse words in English and they wouldn't understand." Hana said laughing.
"Yeah when Hana was 12 she got in trouble at school for cruising in English and ever since our parents know every curse word in English." I said seeing Hana get slightly embarrassed as she flipped me off.
Violet just watched our interactions smiling widely. "So Hana any boys in your life." Violet asked as the rolled out the cookie dough. "Nika go away." She said quickly. Hana has always hated telling me about the boys she likes as she knows I'll tease her about it. I got up making my way to the living room and plopping down on the couch.
I listened as Violet and Hana whispered back and forth giggling and at one point laughing hysterically. I walked into the kitchen seeing the two of them together like they've know each other for years.
