The next day, snow started to come down fast and hard, and Hyunjin was jealous of the way he had to bundle up while the others didn't even bother with their warmer blood. They always stuck to him like magnets or trailed behind him like lost puppies whenever he walked with them somewhere, and Hyunjin found it amusing at times like this.
Hyunjin decided to drop by the meat market after calculus to buy the jerky that the wolves liked so much. Jisung and Changbin insisted upon coming with him anytime he went somewhere public, and now with the knowledge that they were werewolves just doing what their natural instincts told them to do- Hyunjin wasn't quite as annoyed as he would have been.
Felix had run off to his dance class right after calculus, leaving the three of them to bear the cold weather together, Jisung staying right by his side. So close that Hyunjin tripped a few times because for some reason, Jisung and Felix had been extra touchy the past few days. Even the others seemed to notice it, but they didn't mention it being anything out of the ordinary to be concerned about, so Hyunjin let them be.
The butcher at the meat market was weird- as always, eyeing Hyunjin with those slit eyes and all of his bald glory. Hyunjin wondered if there was such a thing as were-reptiles too, because this man looked like some kind of snake. If snakes could be overweight and smelly.
As soon as his yellow eyes narrowed onto Hyunjin when he pointed at the jerky he always got, Changbin let out some low rumble from his chest. It was weird to know that humans wouldn't be able to make such a warning noise.
The butcher seemed to ignore Changbin as he passed the bag over to Hyunjin. Before Hyunjin could even reach for it, Jisung was snatching it for him and pulling him away while Changbin paid.
"Guys," Hyunjin whined once they were all back together at the entrance of the market. "I can buy some jerky for myself, you don't need to do that."
Changbin just looked at him with fake eyes of innocence, "but they're for us, right?"
Hyunjin sighed, "I guess. But they're for your wolves, so if I see you eating them as a human, I won't talk to you for a week."
Changbin slowly handed over the bag of meat, slightly terrified.
Hyunjin stuffed his cold hands back into his pocket, and before he could turn with the other two to head back to the north forest, Ajax was standing a foot away from them with a sly smile on his face. "Hey!" He greeted, raising a hand, "fancy seeing you here."
At his voice, the two werewolves froze but Hyunjin only raised an eyebrow. "At the town's only market? No, not really."
Ajax's smile dropped and he lowered his hand, especially at the twin glares that Changbin and Jisung shot over Hyunjin's shoulders like overprotective bodyguards. Hyunjin gave them a warning look and if he could say 'down boy' then he would.
Ajax looked like he'd rather be anywhere else than In their presence, and Hyunjin wondered if he knew that they were werewolves.
Hyunjin and Ajax still weren't on the best of terms, but he still bowed slightly in goodbye before he turned to leave. Or at least, he tried to, but couldn't because suddenly Ajax had a hand on his shoulder and Changbin looked like he wanted to bite his hand off. In his human form.
"Is there something else?" Hyunjin asked, and Ajax nodded.
"I was wondering if on test day where the professor grades our portfolios, If you'd like to get coffee with me before class?" He asked hopefully, "then, we can get there early and look at the other's art work-"
"Oh, I'm terribly sorry," Jisung said with all of the fake sweetness he could muster. He and Changbin had placed Hyunjin between the two of them like he was some human tug-of-war toy.
"You see, we walk him to class everyday, better luck next time."Ajax's look of hopeful desperation was crushed and Jisung just smiled in apology. It was quite possibly the fakest smile that Hyunjin had ever seen- and he had seen his father smile the same way every time the social workers paid a visit.
"I see."
"Let's go," Changbin pulled at the arm he had looped around Hyunjin to turn their group around. Almost immediately, Jisung was rubbing his face along the side of Hyunjin's and Hyunjin just let him, assuming it was yet another wolf thing that he could get used to.
"What was that for?" Hyunjin asked them, once Ajax was out of sight and earshot. "You didn't have to crush his hopes and dreams like that."
Jisung scoffed, "uh- yeah we did. He's dangerous, Jinnie." His voice was a bit muffled by Hyunjin's neck, and Hyunjin squirmed when he hit a particularly sensitive area. "Jisung-"
"Sorry," Jisung whimpered, guiltily pulling away once he was sure that Hyunjin's neck was okay. "I just really don't like that guy. I don't like him."
Hyunjin snorted at his pure and very biased hate. "Seriously? What is he- a vampire or something?"
There was a beat of silence where Changbin and Jisung made nervous eye contact.
Hyunjin threw his head back with a groan. "You've got to be kidding me."
-
Hyunjin had been spending some quality time for himself at his apartment a few days later because after learning that vampires were real too- well, he needed some time to process. This wasn't that American movie twilight, this was real life, and he had somehow apparently moved into a town full of... He wouldn't say 'monsters' he would refer to them as inhumans.
Hyunjin had gotten a total of three quarters of his his art portfolio done, holed up in his room with little to eat or drink (he was missing Minho's food) until he felt his phone buzz in the pocket of his sweatpants.
He thought for a moment, contemplating ignoring the call without even looking at the contact because he had paint all over him, but his anxiety forced him to slide the phone out and mindlessly glance At the contact.
And then do a double take.
Because Jeongin hardly ever called him at all. Sure, he texted them plenty, but the only people who actually preferred talking over calls were Chan and Seungmin because Chan was old and Seungmin had a hard time picking up on tone over text.
Hyunjin bit his lip before pressing the green answer button and bringing the phone up to his ear, balancing it on his shoulder as he wiped his hands off with a rag.
"Jeongin?" He asked, when the line was too silent for comfort. "Innie? Did you call me on accident?"
There was shuffling on the other end of the line before he could finally hear the younger's voice, and when he did talk, he sounded distressed.
"Hyunjin? We need you at the den."
"Right now? I'm kinda working on my painting, Innie-"
"Hyunjin, we need you over here, like, now."
Hyunjin had never heard Jeongin sound so serious before, so he slowly stood from his art stool and left his painting to dry as he slid on a hoodie. Anxiety pooled at the bottom of his gut. "What's wrong Jeongin? Is someone hurt? Are you oka-"
"-everyone's fine, for now, but just try to get here quickly, Hyung. I'll explain everything when you get here."
Before Hyunjin could ask anymore questions, the line went dead with a final beep that for some reason sounded like the knocking on Hyunjin's metaphorical casket.
