Chan really hadn't expected to meet Hyunjin so soon.
Right after their conversation, to be exact.
It was easier for them to divide into smaller groups for their run with no particular pattern for who was partnered with who. They decided that simply by what their wolves begged and pleaded for in that moment- and when Chan's wolf told him to keep Changbin and Felix close to him on the run, well, the heart wanted what it wanted.
In a way, Chan believed his wolf to be smarter than him, even if the animal was everything that his instincts represented and his human brain repulsed. It took a while for him to get used to his wolf at first when he was younger, because it was a powerful beast locked up inside of him that had scared him at first- but now, now they got along just fine.
And it was telling him to have Changbin along because Changbin still couldn't keep check of his own strength sometimes and was more prone to hurt himself or anyone else. Felix, too, because he was full of electric energy and Minho had already dragged Jisung along with him.
Minho's wolf liked the way that Jisung smelled, and that much was very evident.
And maybe fate did work in mysterious ways because that was how they ended up in their current situation, staring out from just beyond the tree line.
While Minho took his pack even deeper into the north, Chan decided to loop around the front side of their territory, and like alarm bells that rang in his head, he could feel a sort of pull in his gut that made him slow his running down just enough to be in line with the other two following behind him.
'Someone's in our territory,' he told them as a warning- to humans, it would sound like a low growl. He could practically see the way Changbin's fur rose at the announcement, and from his other side, Felix sniffed the air curiously, snout up.
His ears twitched, 'the scent smells familiar.'
That could either be a very good thing or a very bad thing, because most of the scents that were familiar in town were bad news for them. Especially the rotting scent of vampires, but when Felix announced that it was a sweeter scent, Chan decided that they should check it out.
Nosing just beyond the tree line of the clearing that led straight to town, at first Chan could only see the looming and slightly dilapidated state of the shitty apartment complex that either should have been renovated or destroyed years ago. It blocked the moonlight slightly, but with their stronger vision at night, Chan eventually made out a humanoid figure tumbling through the clearing to breach the tree line about fifteen yards from them.
Changbin immediately bristled and crouched down, ready to pounce on the figure, but Felix was quick to stop him by jamming his snout to his scruff. Before Chan could ask why Felix was defending a random stranger entering their territory, the silver wolf was already running ahead of them playfully so that they could all get a good view of the human.
Changbin immediately shifted from a defensive posture of a confused one, tilting his head in an utterly canine way. He acted the most like a puppy. 'What's he doing out here?'
'Who is 'he?' Chan asked, because the human was unfamiliar to him. He was clad in sleep and paint stained clothes, dark hair messily pulled up into a half up and half down style as he clumsily padded through the woods, occasionally tripping over roots and running into trees.
'That's Hyunjin,' Felix supplied, tail swishing behind him, 'but he's acting weird.'
'He's asleep,' Chan pointed out once the three of them finally ran ahead of the human enough to see that his eyes were open, but half-lidded and unseeing.
