The first day of classes was nerve wracking for Hyunjin. He liked change and he embraced it often with open arms, because life wouldn't stop for anyone- especially not someone like him.
But still, it didn't change the fact that he recklessly moved himself hours away from the city to an entirely different climate with no friends to speak of and only one number in the contact list of his shitty cell phone. It was safe to say he was nervous.
Just for punctuality, Hyunjin showed up to his ten o'clock class- the earliest one he had- thirty minutes early. The campus itself was beautiful, but small. It only held about seven different colleges nestled around the student center, and the walkways to get to each building were gravel, the trees planted with care to provide shade.
There was something about the campus that was gothic, the buildings dark trimmed with a lot of dark red rose bundles lining them to hide any weeds or cracks in the old foundation. Because it was an ancient old place.
Hyunjin enjoyed the scenery and the silence it provided, even if it made him slightly on edge, the peace was nice.
There wasn't a single student in sight when he entered his lecture hall, and at first he thought he had entered the wrong room because it was less of a lecture hall and more of a studio. There were only about five wooden chairs planted in a circle around a podium that he could only assume to be the teachers, and it was dark inside with only the natural light filtering through the stained glass window above his head.
It was beautiful and slightly creepy.
Hyunjin carefully set his bag down next to one of the wooden chairs and took a seat, pointedly choosing the spot with his front facing to the exit and his back to the dark wall.
He passed the time by setting his canvas up in front of him until the other art students finally started to filter through the door. He tried his best to stand and give them a welcoming smile, bowing slightly as they entered the room, but they only gave him a sideways look- like he was an interruption to their day- before making their way to their own seats.
The smile from Hyunjin's face fell slightly, but at least he could say that he tried his best.
He was an outsider, anyway.
The last student burst his way through the door seconds before the professor, barely late.
"Cutting it close, take a seat." the professor warned, and the student gave a sheepish smile, chuckling nervously. The only empty chair was the one to the right of Hyunjin, so Hyunjin smiled warmly at him when he set his bag down.
Surprisingly, his smile was returned.
"Hi," the student greeted all by himself without Hyunjin even needing to take the initiative. When the student finally faced him, fully sat down in the uncomfortable chair, he froze in surprise for a full moment, eyes trailing up Hyunjin like he was some kind of spectacle.
Hyunjin shuffled self consciously, pushing a dark strand of hair from his face. Did he have paint on his face from earlier that morning?
Sudden dread filled Hyunjin. Maybe he still had blood on him-
"Sorry," the student apologized, finally locking eyes with Hyunjin. He held out a pale, slender hand, and Hyunjin took it happily. "My name's Ajax, third year, nice to meet you."
Ajax was a strange name. Foreign sounding. He must not be from around here, but then again, neither was Hyunjin.
The grip he had on Hyunjin's hand was surprisingly firm despite him being thin and tall, like one of those praying mantis'. His hair was long and dark, a shade even darker than Hyunjin's own.
