Chapter 3:

The next morning the door bell rang while I was eating breakfast and my mom went to answer. When I heard Leo's voice I started choking on my cereal, I didn't want to see him.

"Karla, someone's here to see you!"My mom called from the door.

I pretended not to hear but she came into the kitchen and told me a boy named Leo was looking for me. I walked out onto the porch and closed the door behind me. Leo stood in front of me wearing sweats and an old t shirt. I was still wearing my pajamas. We both looked like a mess, bags under our eyes from zero sleep, a pale face, a tired and sad facial expression. We both stared at each other in silence and I ran back inside crying. I sprinted up stairs, my fingers swiping the tears from my face. I jumped in my bed and buried myself in my pillows. I cried again but this time quietly so my mom wouldn't hear me. I wondered what Leo wanted, to scream at me again or give me the bill for his trophy case. I didn't want this job anymore, I wanted to quit, but of course I couldn't.

I went over to my cousins lake house later in the afternoon and I wouldn't be back until Sunday evening. It was quiet and peaceful, and no one would bother me. I laid in a hammock over the water and got the sleep I missed out on last night. Some time away from the drama would be good I thought drifting away.
