Chapter 4:

Monday morning I walked to school fifteen feet behind Leo. He made no attempt to talk to me and neither did I. But as we neared the ghetto block I began to worry more and more. When I was younger I knew I had to walk home on this street so I started taekwondo to defend myself. Leo was a defenseless celebrity, an easy target. I got closer to Leo when a group of guys wearing black and red stopped in front of us. They looked us up and down and consulted each other.

"It's little miss attitude." One said.

"Who's the boy?" Asked another smoking a blunt.

I walked toward the guys, they split in half like the Red Sea and I walked right through. I turned back and saw they were still surrounding Leo.

"Ay empty your pockets fool." They said to Leo.

I pulled one of the guys aside and grabbed Leo's hand. But the guy who had been smoking dropped his blunt and grabbed me from behind, putting a knife to my throat.

"You had your chance to leave but you came back, so don't expect to come out alive." He whispered, his breath clouding my thoughts.I closed my eyes in disgust and held onto Leo's hand tighter, I could hear the other guys trying to pull him away from me. I needed two hands to remove myself from the guys grasp but if I let go of Leo I might never see him again or worse he'd be dead. Leo somehow understanding let go as I pulled down the guys arm, passed it over my head and stabbed him in the stomach. I then spun him around and kicked him down. I looked back at Leo and saw him blocking punches and kicking guys down effortlessly. I ran over to him as he round housed a guy in the face. He then grabbed my hand and we ran for our lives. Once we were at a safe distance we caught our breath and sat down on the curb.

"I didn't know you did martial arts." I said to Leo.

"Yeah, that's what all those trophies were for." He said awkwardly.

"I'm sorry about that." I said.

"It's okay. I found Rodger hiding in the bathroom and I saw your hand bleeding. What happened?"

I assumed Rodger was his German Shepard and kept talking.

"Rodger bit me and pushed me into your trophy case."

"I thought so, Rodgers new so he's a little unpredictable. And that's why I went over Saturday."

I had a flash back of us looking tired and sad, staring into each others eyes, a thick silence swallowing us up.

"But you didn't say anything." I said.

"The words wouldn't come out." He whispered looking down.

Here we were again, not knowing what to say, sitting in silence.

"We're gonna be late, lets go." I said standing up.

Leo looked up at me and I offered him my hand.

"Thanks." He said as I pulled him up.

We walked to school slowly while I explained to Leo how our day was going to go. He had the same classes as me, and I'm in all honors, he was in for a real treat.

"What's algebra 2 ?" Leo asked.

"Seriously!" I gasped.

"Just kidding." He laughed.
