Sophie's POVThe cabin was small, barely big enough for the two of us, but it was hidden well enough that I felt a sense of relief as soon as we stepped inside. Ryan immediately checked the windows, making sure everything was secure before he sat down on the worn couch, looking exhausted.
"You think we'll be safe here?" I asked, setting my bag down by the door.
"For now," he said, his eyes scanning the room as if he was still on high alert. "Luca won't find us here. At least, not right away."
I sat down next to him, the weight of everything settling over me like a heavy blanket. We were really doing this—running, hiding, waiting for a chance to strike back. It was terrifying, but at the same time, being here with Ryan made me feel strangely calm. Despite everything, I trusted him.
"I'm sorry," Ryan said quietly, his voice thick with guilt. "I never wanted this for you, Sophie. You shouldn't have to be a part of this mess."
I shook my head, reaching out to take his hand. "You don't get to apologize for wanting to keep me safe. I made my choice, remember?"
Ryan's grip tightened around my hand, and for a moment, we just sat there in the quiet of the cabin, the world outside feeling far away. But even in that moment of calm, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were living on borrowed time. Luca wouldn't give up easily, and sooner or later, we'd have to face him.
