Ryan's POVSitting by Sophie's bedside, watching her fragile chest rise and fall with each breath, I realized something I had been too stubborn to admit before. She was too good for this life, for the chaos and danger that came with being around me. She deserved more—more than a guy who could barely keep her safe, more than someone whose past could haunt her future.
I loved her. But loving her meant letting her go.
Her eyes fluttered open for a brief moment, and I could see the confusion and exhaustion in her gaze. I smiled, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "You're going to be okay," I whispered.
She gave me a faint smile, too tired to respond, and her eyes closed again. I stayed by her side for a while longer, memorizing every detail of her face, every breath she took.
Then I stood up, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "Goodbye, Sophie," I whispered, my heart breaking as I turned and walked out of the hospital room.
