Hogwarts always felt a little more magical during the holiday season. The castle halls were decked out with garlands of holly, glittering ornaments, and twinkling lights. Students wore scarves and gloves as they bustled through the corridors, and a light dusting of snow seemed to permanently settle over the grounds.
But this year, something different was going on-something that had Draco Malfoy completely on edge.
It was the mistletoe. And not just any mistletoe-enchanted mistletoe.
Everywhere Draco went, the mistletoe seemed to be waiting for him, and worse, it always seemed to appear whenever Harry Potter was around. At first, Draco thought it was just bad luck. He and Potter had ended up near the same mistletoe a few times, and it was awkward, sure, but nothing more. But after the third or fourth time, it started feeling a little too intentional.
The first incident had been in the library, where Draco had been minding his own business, reading about some obscure charm. Harry had walked in with Hermione and Ron, and just as Harry passed by Draco's table, a sprig of mistletoe had appeared directly above them. Draco had nearly choked on his own breath as he grabbed his books and left in a hurry, ignoring Harry's confused look.
The next time had been in the Great Hall. Draco had been finishing lunch when Harry had walked by, chatting animatedly with Dean Thomas. The second Harry got close, mistletoe appeared above their heads, and Draco had shot out of his seat, muttering something about being late for class.
Now, after a week of dodging Harry at every turn, Draco was officially in avoidance mode. He was determined to stay as far away from Harry Potter as possible, lest the enchanted mistletoe decide to make things even more awkward than they already were.
But Harry had noticed the avoidance. And now, he was starting to get annoyed.
Harry stood in the middle of the Transfiguration corridor, watching Draco disappear around a corner for the third time that day. This was getting ridiculous. Draco had been avoiding him all week, and Harry couldn't figure out why. At first, he thought it was just coincidence-they had been busy with classes, after all-but after Draco had bolted from the common area for no apparent reason earlier that morning, Harry knew something was up.
"What's his problem?" Harry muttered under his breath, his frustration growing. He had thought things between him and Draco were getting better this year. They weren't exactly friends, but the rivalry and tension that had defined their previous years at Hogwarts had simmered down. They'd even had a few decent conversations here and there, and Draco hadn't once thrown a snide remark his way.
But now, Draco was practically running in the opposite direction whenever Harry got close.
Harry sighed, his mind spinning as he tried to figure out what had gone wrong. Maybe he had said something to offend Draco without realizing it. Or maybe-
Just then, a familiar voice interrupted his thoughts.
"Harry?"
Harry turned to see Hermione approaching, her brow furrowed in concern. "What are you doing just standing here?"
"Nothing," Harry said quickly, though his frustration was evident in his tone. "Just... thinking."
"About Draco Malfoy?" Hermione asked knowingly, raising an eyebrow.
Harry blinked, taken aback. "How did you-?"
"You've been watching him run away from you all week," Hermione said with a sigh. "It's kind of hard to miss."
Harry scowled, crossing his arms. "Yeah, I've noticed. I don't know what his problem is. I thought we were... I don't know, getting along better this year. But now he's avoiding me like I've got some kind of disease."
