It was just supposed to be another ordinary Potions class. Harry had sat down at his shared worktable with Draco, still half-asleep from a restless night. They had been getting along better in their eighth year, much to Harry's surprise. They weren't exactly friends, but the bickering had simmered down into the occasional teasing remark, and surprisingly, they made a good team when it came to brewing potions.
That morning, Professor Slughorn had assigned them the task of brewing Veritaserum, the truth-telling potion. Harry wasn't particularly excited about it-he had enough secrets to keep without worrying about being dosed with something that made him blurt them all out. But it was just class, so he didn't think much of it.
"Careful, Potter," Draco drawled, his silver eyes watching Harry closely as he added another ingredient to their cauldron. "You're about to ruin the entire batch."
Harry rolled his eyes. "I've got it under control, Malfoy."
Draco smirked, leaning back in his chair, his arms crossed casually. "Sure you do."
They continued brewing in silence for the next several minutes, Harry trying his best to ignore the way Draco's presence made his heart race slightly. He still wasn't sure why that happened-it had been happening more and more lately, ever since they had started spending time together in Potions class. It wasn't annoyance, exactly, but it was something. Something Harry didn't want to think too hard about.
When their potion was finally ready, Harry wiped his hands on his robes and sat back, satisfied. The liquid in the cauldron was a shimmering, pale silver-the telltale sign of Veritaserum.
"All done," Harry said, glancing at Draco.
Draco peered into the cauldron, his lips quirking into a small, approving smile. "Not bad, Potter."
"Not bad?" Harry huffed. "It's perfect."
Draco smirked, clearly amused by Harry's irritation. "If you say so."
Before Harry could respond, Slughorn bustled over to their table, his eyes twinkling as he inspected their work. "Ah, very well done, Mr. Potter, Mr. Malfoy," he said cheerfully. "Just a quick test, and we'll move on."
Harry frowned. "Test?"
Slughorn chuckled, pulling out a small vial from his pocket and dipping it into their cauldron. "Just a small sample, Mr. Potter. To ensure it's brewed correctly."
Harry exchanged a nervous glance with Draco, who raised an eyebrow in amusement. "You're not scared of your own potion, are you, Potter?"
"Of course not," Harry muttered, though he couldn't help but feel a little uneasy.
Slughorn, oblivious to Harry's discomfort, handed the vial to Harry with a smile. "Just a drop, Mr. Potter. It won't force you to spill your deepest secrets-not unless someone asks the right questions, of course."
Harry hesitated for a moment, but then, under the watchful eyes of both Slughorn and Draco, he tipped the vial back and let a single drop of the potion touch his tongue.
At first, nothing happened. The potion was tasteless, and Harry felt no different. He let out a relieved sigh, handing the vial back to Slughorn.
"See?" Harry said, turning to Draco. "Nothing to worry about."
But just as the words left his mouth, he felt a strange warmth spreading through his chest, and before he could stop himself, he blurted out, "I think you're really attractive."
Draco's eyes widened, and Harry froze, his heart skipping a beat. What did I just say?
Slughorn chuckled, completely unaware of the tension suddenly crackling between them. "Ah, looks like it's working perfectly! Well done, boys."
