Harry didn't plan on using the Invisibility Cloak for this. Not at first. It had just been an ordinary afternoon in their eighth year at Hogwarts, and Harry had been heading back to the dormitory when he'd spotted Draco Malfoy slipping into an empty classroom. Nothing suspicious about that, right? Except Harry had noticed Draco doing this a lot lately-disappearing to places where he thought no one would follow him. At first, Harry had brushed it off as Draco needing space. After everything that had happened during the war, everyone had their way of coping, and Draco seemed to be someone who liked his solitude.
But then... curiosity got the better of him.
It had started innocently enough. Harry had seen Draco acting strange-fidgeting more, disappearing for longer periods of time, and coming back to the common areas looking more stressed than when he left. And so, on a whim, Harry decided to follow him one day. He hadn't brought the cloak with him, so he had hung back, keeping to the shadows as best he could. But Draco had been too careful, too quick, and Harry had lost him in the winding corridors of Hogwarts.
That night, lying in bed, Harry had made a decision. He was going to use the Invisibility Cloak. Just once. Just to see where Draco was going and what he was doing. He told himself it wasn't about spying-it was about... understanding. He just needed to figure out what was going on with Draco. And if he had to be sneaky to do that, well, so be it.
So, the next afternoon, Harry slipped the cloak over himself and followed Draco out of the Great Hall after lunch. He trailed behind as Draco wound his way through the castle, heading toward one of the abandoned classrooms on the fifth floor. Harry had been ready to confront Draco if he was up to something suspicious, but as he quietly stepped into the room, what he found was far from what he expected.
Draco wasn't doing anything nefarious. He wasn't plotting or sneaking around with Dark Magic. Instead, he was pacing the length of the empty classroom, running his hands through his hair and muttering to himself.
At first, Harry thought it was just stress. He knew Draco had been dealing with a lot since the war, and maybe this was his way of letting off steam. But as Harry moved closer-still hidden beneath the cloak-he realized that Draco wasn't just muttering. He was practicing something.
And then he heard it.
"Alright, Malfoy," Draco said aloud, his voice low and tense as he paced back and forth. "You've faced worse things than this. You can do this."
Harry frowned, confused. Do what?
Draco stopped pacing and stood in the middle of the room, taking a deep breath. Then, in a voice that was uncharacteristically shaky, he said, "Harry, I..."
Harry's breath caught in his throat. Harry? Why was Draco practicing saying his name?
Draco groaned, running a hand through his hair again. "No. No, that's not right. You can't just blurt it out like that. Be casual. Be cool."
Harry's eyes widened beneath the cloak. Was Draco... practicing talking to him?
Draco took another deep breath and tried again, his voice calmer this time. "Harry, I've been wanting to tell you something for a while now. I... I like you."
Harry's heart skipped a beat, his mind racing. Draco Malfoy liked him? No, that couldn't be right. He had to be hearing this wrong. Maybe Draco was talking about someone else, someone with the same name. But then...
"I know we've never been friends," Draco continued, his voice soft and unsteady. "And we've spent most of our lives hating each other. But this year... this year has been different. You've been different."
