It all started with a rumor. One little comment, a passing observation, and suddenly the whole school was convinced that Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy were secretly seeing each other.
Draco, of course, had been furious when he first overheard a group of Hufflepuff girls whispering about it in the corridor. Harry and Draco? As if! But the more he listened, the more he realized that the rumors were spreading faster than wildfire. It wasn't just a small gossip anymore-it was becoming an expectation. People were starting to ship them, as the Muggle-borns called it.
And that was when Draco came up with the most brilliant plan he'd ever had: fake date Harry Potter for a week, stage a dramatic breakup, and then everyone would find the whole thing too awkward to talk about ever again.
It was perfect. They could control the narrative, squash the rumors, and come out of it with their pride intact.
Except for one tiny, unforeseen complication: Draco was actually starting to like fake dating Harry.
Draco had approached Harry about the plan with all the confidence in the world, as if it were the most natural thing in the universe to suggest. They had been awkwardly avoiding each other since the rumors started, but Draco knew they couldn't ignore it forever.
"So," Draco had said, cornering Harry outside the library one evening. "You've heard what people are saying about us, right?"
Harry had blinked at him, looking confused. "What people are saying about us? What do you mean?"
Draco had sighed dramatically, rolling his eyes. "You must be the only one in the entire school who hasn't heard. Apparently, we're dating now."
Harry's eyes had widened in surprise. "Wait-what? Who said that?"
"Everyone," Draco had replied, his voice filled with exasperation. "Half the school is convinced we're secretly together."
Harry had stared at him for a moment, clearly baffled by the news. "But... we're not."
"Obviously," Draco had said, crossing his arms. "But the rumors aren't going away. So, I've come up with a solution."
Harry had raised an eyebrow, clearly skeptical. "What kind of solution?"
And that's when Draco had laid out his plan. Fake dating. A dramatic breakup. And then, freedom from the rumors forever.
Harry had looked dubious at first, but Draco had been persuasive. "Come on, Potter," Draco had said, his voice dripping with confidence. "It's the perfect plan. We'll give them what they want for a week, and then we'll break up in such a dramatic, public way that no one will ever bring it up again. They'll be too embarrassed."
Harry had still hesitated, frowning slightly. "I don't know, Malfoy. It seems... complicated."
"It's one week," Draco had insisted. "You can survive that, can't you? Besides, it'll be fun. You get to pretend to date me. What more could you want?"
Harry had flushed at that, his face turning pink, and Draco had felt a strange sense of satisfaction at the sight. It was amusing, really, how easily flustered Harry got when Draco teased him. Maybe this fake dating plan wouldn't be so bad after all.
The first few days of the plan went surprisingly well.
They made sure to be seen together in all the right places: sitting together at meals, walking to class side by side, and even sharing quiet conversations in the courtyard. Draco played the part of the doting boyfriend perfectly-smirking whenever someone caught them talking, casually throwing an arm around Harry's shoulder in the corridors, and making sure to drop little hints of affection just loud enough for others to overhear.
