Draco's smirk faltered, his eyes widening in surprise at Harry's sudden outburst. He stood frozen, his arms still crossed, but the confident air he'd been wearing moments before seemed to slip away.
"What?" Draco asked, his voice quieter than Harry had ever heard it.
Harry groaned, feeling the embarrassment flood him as he realized what he'd just blurted out. There was no going back now. His hands were shaking, his heart pounding in his chest, but there was no escaping this conversation. He had to push through.
"I like you," Harry repeated, his voice shaky but louder now, almost defiant. "Not some mystery person, not someone else. You. And this-" He gestured between them. "-this whole 'flirting lesson' thing is driving me mad because all I can think about is... well, you."
Draco blinked, his face flushing slightly as he stared at Harry, clearly taken aback by the confession. He opened his mouth to say something, but nothing came out.
Harry sighed, feeling like a complete idiot. "I know it's stupid," he muttered, running a hand through his hair again. "I've been trying to figure out how to tell you for weeks, but every time I tried, I got nervous and ended up saying something ridiculous. I didn't want to ruin whatever... this is between us."
Draco was still silent, his expression unreadable, and Harry's stomach twisted with anxiety. Had he completely messed this up? Was Draco going to laugh at him? Reject him? Tell him to forget about it and go back to pretending like nothing had happened?
"I didn't mean to make things awkward," Harry continued, his voice softer now. "If you don't feel the same way, it's fine. I'll deal with it. Just... forget I said anything."
Draco's lips parted slightly, as if he was about to speak, but he hesitated, his silver eyes flicking up to meet Harry's. For the first time, there was no teasing smirk, no playful gleam in his gaze. Instead, he looked... unsure.
"You like me?" Draco asked quietly, as if he needed to hear it again to believe it.
Harry swallowed hard, his heart pounding. "Yeah. I do."
Draco stared at him for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Harry braced himself for the rejection, for the inevitable awkwardness that would follow, but instead, Draco let out a soft, almost incredulous laugh.
"You... you're serious?" Draco said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Harry nodded, his face flushed with both embarrassment and hope. "Yeah. I'm serious."
Draco's eyes softened, and for a moment, he just looked at Harry, as if trying to process everything. Then, slowly, a small, tentative smile tugged at the corners of his lips.
"Well," Draco said quietly, his voice more vulnerable than Harry had ever heard it, "I suppose that makes two of us."
Harry blinked, his heart skipping a beat. "What?"
Draco let out a soft laugh, shaking his head as he looked down, almost as if he couldn't believe what he was about to say. "I wasn't offering to help you with your 'crush' because I thought you had one on someone else. I just... I thought if I spent more time with you, maybe I could figure out how to tell you that I-"
He paused, his cheeks flushing slightly as he met Harry's gaze again. "That I like you too."
Harry's mind reeled, his heart racing as Draco's words sank in. Draco liked him too? This whole time, Draco had been trying to figure out how to confess his feelings too?
"You... like me?" Harry repeated, still trying to wrap his head around the fact that Draco Malfoy-the boy who had once been his rival, the boy who had spent years antagonizing him-liked him.
Draco rolled his eyes, though there was no real bite to it. "Yes, Potter. I like you. Merlin, you're slow sometimes."
Harry let out a breathless laugh, relief and disbelief flooding through him in equal measure. "I- I didn't think... I mean, I thought..."
Draco smirked, the familiar teasing gleam returning to his eyes. "You thought what? That I was helping you woo some imaginary crush? Please."
Harry chuckled, feeling the tension between them finally ease. "Honestly? Yeah. I thought you were just messing with me."
Draco raised an eyebrow, stepping closer until they were just inches apart. "Messing with you, Potter? I was flirting with you this entire time."
Harry's face flushed again, though this time it was with a mix of embarrassment and something warmer. "You were?"
"Of course," Draco said, his voice soft but amused. "I thought you'd figure it out eventually, but apparently, you needed me to spell it out."
Harry laughed, the weight that had been sitting on his chest for weeks finally lifting. "I guess I did."
They stood there for a moment, the space between them charged with something new-something that felt both exciting and terrifying. Harry's heart was still racing, but this time, it wasn't from nerves. It was from the anticipation of what came next.
"So," Harry said, his voice quieter now, "what happens now?"
Draco's smile softened, and he took another small step closer, his silver eyes flicking down to Harry's lips for just a second before meeting his gaze again. "Well, Potter, I think it's time we stop pretending."
Before Harry could respond, Draco leaned in, closing the distance between them and pressing his lips to Harry's in a soft, tentative kiss.
For a moment, everything else disappeared-the room, the castle, the world outside. It was just Draco's lips on his, warm and gentle, and the overwhelming realization that this was really happening.
When they pulled apart, both of them were breathless, their foreheads resting together as they stood there, the weight of everything finally settling between them.
"Well," Draco said with a small, satisfied smirk, "I suppose you didn't need lessons after all."
Harry chuckled softly, feeling warmth spread through his chest. "I guess not."
Draco's smile widened slightly, and he reached up to brush a strand of hair from Harry's forehead. "Just so you know, Potter... you're terrible at hiding your feelings."
Harry grinned, his heart soaring as he leaned in for another kiss. "Yeah, well, lucky for me, you're not."
And as their lips met again, Harry realized that maybe all those awkward, stammered confessions had led exactly where they were supposed to.
Right here. With Draco.
The End... or perhaps, just the beginning.
