It was another Potions class in their eighth year at Hogwarts, and Draco was focused-determined, really-not to let anything distract him. Especially not Harry Potter, who had become an even more distracting presence ever since they had been paired as partners in Potions. Draco hated how Harry was always so casual, so infuriatingly relaxed during class. It didn't help that their constant proximity had made Draco more aware of how attractive Harry had become.
Draco tried to push those thoughts aside as he carefully measured out a vial of crushed moonstone, adding it to their cauldron. Today, they were brewing Veritaserum, the truth-telling potion. And while Draco prided himself on being excellent at Potions, this particular brew had him feeling a little uneasy.
The last thing he needed was to accidentally blurt out something he'd regret. Especially not in front of Harry.
"Careful, Malfoy," Harry said from beside him, watching as Draco carefully stirred the mixture. "Don't want to mess this one up."
Draco shot him a sharp look. "Please. You're the one who nearly overcooked the last batch of Sleeping Draught."
Harry grinned. "Yeah, but I didn't."
Draco rolled his eyes and continued stirring, refusing to let Harry's teasing get under his skin. He was just about to add the final ingredient when Professor Slughorn wandered over, beaming at their progress.
"Very good, very good, boys," Slughorn said, inspecting the potion bubbling softly in their cauldron. "Now, just a quick test to see if it's brewed correctly."
Draco stiffened. "A test?"
Slughorn nodded, pulling out a small vial and dipping it into their cauldron to collect a sample. "Just a drop, Mr. Malfoy. Nothing to worry about-just to see if it works as intended."
Draco hesitated, glancing at the shimmering liquid. The idea of ingesting something that would force him to tell the truth in front of Harry made his stomach twist with anxiety. But Slughorn was watching him expectantly, and Draco knew there was no way to avoid it.
"Fine," Draco muttered, taking the vial from Slughorn. He hesitated for only a moment longer before tipping it back and letting a drop of the potion touch his tongue.
At first, he felt nothing. The potion was tasteless, and Draco sighed in relief. "There, see? It's perfectly-"
But then he felt a strange warmth spreading through his chest, and before he could stop himself, he blurted out, "I think Potter looks annoyingly good today."
Harry's eyes widened, and Draco froze, his heart skipping a beat. What did I just say?
Slughorn, blissfully unaware of the chaos he had just unleashed, patted Draco on the back. "Well done! The potion is working splendidly. Carry on, gentlemen." And with that, he moved on to the next table, leaving Draco and Harry standing in stunned silence.
Draco's mind raced as he tried to process what had just come out of his mouth. Did I just tell Potter he looks good?
Harry blinked at him, still recovering from the shock. "Did you just-"
"I didn't mean that," Draco said quickly, his voice rising slightly in panic. But then, much to his horror, the Veritaserum took hold again, and he added, "Actually, I did. But I didn't want to say it."
Harry stared at him, his brows furrowed in confusion. "Uh, thanks?"
Draco groaned, pressing his palm to his forehead. He could feel the truth serum working, forcing him to say things he had been holding back for months.
"This is ridiculous," Draco muttered, his voice tinged with desperation. "Of all the potions I could have brewed correctly, it had to be this one."
Harry's curiosity piqued, and he took a small step closer, his lips quirking into an amused smile. "So... what else are you hiding, Malfoy?"
Draco shot him a glare, his face flushing. "I'm not hiding anything."
Harry raised an eyebrow. "Really?"
Draco opened his mouth to deny it, but the truth serum wouldn't let him. Instead, he found himself blurting out, "Okay, fine. I've been hiding a lot. Mostly about you."
Harry blinked, his expression shifting from amused to something more serious. "About me?"
Draco clenched his fists, trying to resist the urge to keep talking, but the potion was relentless. "Yes. You drive me mad, Potter. Ever since we got stuck as partners this year. You're always so casual and... and good-looking, and it's infuriating."
Harry's mouth fell open in surprise. "Wait, what?"
Draco groaned, his face burning with humiliation. "Merlin, I can't stop. It's the stupid potion."
Harry's stunned silence was starting to get to Draco, and the more Harry stared at him, the more flustered Draco became. He tried to stop himself, but the words kept pouring out. "I can't stand it. Every time we work together, you're always so relaxed and... and annoyingly nice to me, and I can't stop thinking about it. About you. It's like you're trying to drive me insane."
Harry was still staring at Draco, his eyes wide with shock. "You... you think about me?"
Draco felt like he was going to crawl out of his skin. "Yes, alright? I think about you. All the time. And it's incredibly frustrating."
Harry blinked, clearly at a loss for words. "I-"
"And not just in a 'he's so annoying' way," Draco continued, despite his best efforts to stop. "In a 'why the hell does he have to be so attractive and charming and make me feel things I shouldn't' kind of way."
The room seemed to grow quieter as Harry processed what Draco had just confessed. The awkward tension between them was palpable, and Draco was pretty sure he was going to implode from embarrassment any second now.
Finally, Harry spoke, his voice softer than before. "So... you like me?"
