Bound to Happen

Eighth year at Hogwarts had been going on for months now, and everyone had noticed the tension between Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy-everyone except, apparently, Harry and Draco themselves.

Hermione Granger was at her wit's end. She was tired of watching the two of them tiptoe around their obvious feelings, bickering and sneaking glances at each other when they thought no one was looking. They shared a dormitory, they worked together on class projects, and they even occasionally spent time together in the common room. And yet, despite the fact that they were practically inseparable, neither one seemed capable of admitting that they liked each other.

So, being Hermione Granger, she decided to take matters into her own hands.

It was a cold Saturday afternoon, and Harry and Draco were sitting in the Gryffindor common room, working quietly at opposite ends of the room. Harry was pretending to read his Defense Against the Dark Arts textbook, though in reality, he was sneaking glances at Draco every few minutes. Draco, on the other hand, was writing in a notebook, looking particularly sharp in his usual perfectly pressed robes, his platinum hair catching the light just so.

The tension between them was palpable, but as usual, neither of them said anything.

That's when Hermione entered the room with a bright smile and a suspicious-looking set of handcuffs.

"Harry! Draco! Perfect, you're both here!" she said cheerfully, walking over to the two of them.

Harry frowned, eyeing the handcuffs warily. "What are those for?"

Hermione waved them in the air nonchalantly. "Oh, just a little experiment I'm conducting. I've been studying Muggle magic-you know, the kind that doesn't actually work-and I thought it would be interesting to test a few things out."

Draco raised an eyebrow, looking thoroughly unimpressed. "Muggle magic? Really, Granger?"

Hermione smiled sweetly. "Yes, Draco. I thought you'd be a good sport and help me test these." She held up the handcuffs, giving them a little shake. "They're enchanted to lock two people together for a few hours. Just for fun."

Draco's eyes narrowed. "And why, exactly, would I want to participate in this little experiment?"

Hermione gave him an innocent look. "Well, for the sake of... education, of course. You wouldn't want to deprive Harry of a learning experience, would you?"

Harry, who had no idea what Hermione was up to but was already suspicious, tried to protest. "Hermione, I don't think-"

But before he could finish his sentence, Hermione had already clicked one end of the handcuffs around his wrist and the other around Draco's.

Draco jumped up, glaring at Hermione. "What the hell are you doing, Granger?"

Hermione gave them both an exaggeratedly apologetic look. "Oops! I, uh, seem to have lost the key."

Harry's eyes widened. "What do you mean, you lost the key?"

Hermione shrugged, looking far too pleased with herself. "I'm sure it'll turn up. Eventually."

Draco yanked at the cuffs, his eyes flashing with irritation. "This is ridiculous! Take them off!"

Hermione smiled innocently. "Sorry, Draco. No can do. You'll just have to figure it out on your own. Besides, it's only for a few hours." She gave them both a knowing look. "Maybe it'll help you two... bond."

With that, Hermione turned and left the room, leaving Harry and Draco standing there, handcuffed together, staring after her in disbelief.

For a few moments, neither of them said anything. Harry tugged at the handcuffs, trying to see if there was some way to slip his wrist free, but they were snug and didn't budge.
