Ruby Cosmetics threw a celebration for the successful launch of their latest line, the party buzzing with congratulatory cheers and laughter. Under the warm glow of chandeliers, Jennie moved through the crowd, smiling as her team and close friends offered toasts and praise. It felt like a hard-won victory, and she allowed herself a brief moment to bask in it.
But then, she caught sight of Taehyung across the room. He was watching her, a quiet admiration in his eyes that made her pulse quicken. Despite her best efforts to avoid him, it wasn’t long before he approached, his smile gentle but persistent.
“Looks like your hard work paid off,” he said, raising his glass toward her. “Congratulations, Jennie. You deserve this.”
She met his gaze, emotions churning under her poised exterior. “Thank you. I couldn’t have done it without the team. Or... without your support.” Her voice softened, and for a moment, she felt herself slipping, drawn into the warmth she’d long tried to push away.
But she quickly took a step back, a subtle distance forming between them. “I just… I don’t want things to get complicated, Taehyung. I don’t want the past to impact you, or Ruby.”
Taehyung sighed, setting down his glass, and took a step closer, close enough that the familiar pull between them was undeniable. “Jennie, you don’t need to protect me from anything. I chose to stand by you, knowing full well what it could mean. And I don’t regret it for a second.”
She looked away, her heart racing, feeling herself get drawn back into memories of their past—the late nights, the laughter, the easy connection they used to share. She’d promised herself she wouldn’t let those feelings resurface, that she’d focus on her brand and nothing else. But standing this close to him, she felt her resolve slipping.
“You don’t understand,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “If I let myself... it’s going to be harder to stop. And I can’t risk you getting hurt because of me.”
Taehyung’s hand reached for hers, gently enough that she could pull away, but firmly enough to show he wasn’t going to let go easily. “Jennie, if you’re still caught up in protecting me, then you don’t understand how much I want this. Whatever comes, I’m here for it. And I’m here for you.”
Jennie felt her defenses crumbling as his words settled over her, stirring something deep within. He’d stepped back into her life with a quiet determination, forcing her to confront the emotions she’d tried to bury. But his gaze held nothing but reassurance and warmth, the same warmth that had once made her feel like she could take on anything.
As she looked up into his eyes, the familiar feeling swept over her, unbidden yet undeniable. She knew the road ahead wasn’t going to be simple. But, in that moment, with Taehyung’s hand in hers, she felt the faintest spark of hope.
Jennie’s breath caught as she looked into Taehyung’s eyes, feeling the weight of his words. All her carefully constructed walls felt fragile now, trembling with the ache of wanting to let him in. The warmth of his hand in hers was steady, grounding—and it reminded her of how effortlessly he had always made her feel safe, like home.
She glanced around, aware of the celebration still bustling around them, and quietly led him toward a quieter corner of the room, away from prying eyes. They slipped through a side door and found themselves in an empty, softly lit hallway. The sound of laughter and music faded into a muffled hum behind them, leaving them wrapped in silence.
Jennie’s heart raced, and she felt a hint of vulnerability rise to the surface as she met Taehyung’s gaze again. “This feels like it could be a mistake,” she murmured, but her voice held no conviction, only a raw honesty that surprised even her.
Taehyung shook his head gently, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. “Not every risk is a mistake, Jennie. Sometimes, it’s exactly what we need.”
A soft smile flickered across her face as she let out a breath she didn’t know she’d been holding. And before she could overthink, she stepped forward, closing the distance between them. She felt his hands move gently to her waist, drawing her closer, and as she looked up, she saw a warmth in his eyes that made everything else disappear.
She closed her eyes and let herself give in, feeling his lips brush softly against hers, tentative at first, but then deepening as if they’d both waited too long for this moment. Time seemed to stand still, the world outside fading into insignificance as she let herself melt into him, into the familiar feeling she had tried so hard to resist.
When they finally pulled back, she looked up, slightly breathless, her cheeks flushed. She knew things would be complicated, that they were stepping into uncharted territory. But in this quiet moment, away from everything else, she felt a quiet certainty settle in her heart.
For the first time in a long time, Jennie allowed herself to believe that maybe—just maybe—this was exactly where she was meant to be.
