FORKS, WASHINGTON: JANUARY 2005

BAG IN hand, Astrid trudged down the halls of Forks High fighting the frown that wanted to take over her face. She was damp, the light rain from outside having soaked into her sweater and canvas shoes. Despite having lived in Forks for several years, wet weather and her still didn't get along, Astrid still not liking the chill that rain brought with it. It was worse in the colder months; the chill being replaced by the icy feeling of winter that nestled itself down into your bones. Michigan wasn't much better, winters both snowy and windy, so at least in Forks Astrid didn't have to worry about that. But in Michigan it hadn't rained ninety percent of the year, and the sun wasn't afraid to show it face from the behind the clouds. Michigan winter's may have sucked, but Forks weather seemed to suck all year round. Something that Astrid and the rest of the student body could whole heartedly agree on.

Astrid finally arrived at her locker at the end of the hall, chucking her blue bag inside with a sigh. A couple of students milled around the blonde girl, some leaning up against lockers and other talking animatedly with their friends as they slowly made their way to their classes. It was 7:50am and the first bell had to just began ringing, Astrid's usual time of arrival. The teenager leant into her locker in search of her AP Chemistry book for her first class, finding it stuffed into the back where she had left it the last time. She hoped that Mr Peters wouldn't comment on her absence from yesterday, and that she could slip in without his notice. However, Astrid knew her luck sucked and that he would probably give her a lecture about ensuring she attended his class no matter what. Logically, the girl knew if she told Mr Peters she was at the hospital he probably would go easier on her, but her hospital visits where her best kept secret and she didn't like special treatment.
