FORKS, WASHINGTON: MARCH 2005

ASTRID HILL was known to be a pragmatic and realistic person. She didn't believe in ghosts, or fairies, or monsters in the dark. She scoffed at the idea of witches and werewolves and laughed at the thought of mermaids. Astrid was the type of child that figured out Santa Claus, that never believe in the Easter Bunny and played along with her parents to keep them happy. Fairytales were fairytales, movies were movies, and real life was real life. Simple, plain, and easy. She believed in what she could see, and Astrid went about her life living this fact. At least she did, until Jasper Hale crash landed into her life with his golden eyes and charming grin and tore her worldview asunder. Everything Astrid Hill thought she believed now uncertain in the presence of this beautiful honey-haired boy. She could almost hear the universe laughing at her now, amused by its own scheming.

Astrid glanced at the boy seated beside her who smiled back at her handsomely. Yes, she thought to herself, Jasper Hale was a strange twist of fate indeed.
