FORKS, WASHINGTON: MARCH 2005

ASTRID stared into the depths of the soapy water, as she methodically cleaned each dish and placed it on the edge of the sink with a clink. Beside her, Astrid could feel her mother's eyes glancing over at her occasionally as Christine dried the dishes her daughter cleaned and then put them away. It was their usual routine, streamlined and practiced with ease, but Astrid knew there was something brimming in her mother, something that older woman was dying to talk about. However, neither blonde said much to each other, continuing through the motions of a usual Tuesday night. Both could tell that something felt different, something had changed. It was a silent parlay of who would open their mouth first.

"So, Jasper Hale...is it serious?" Christine asked finally.

Astrid glanced up from the dirty dishes and shrugged. "I don't know, we're not exactly dating or anything, just hanging out I guess."

"Hanging out." Her mother responded slowing, moving across the kitchen to put some pans away. "Well, that's nice, very casual."

"Yep, that's us" Astrid commented unenthusiastically. "Casual all the way, no labels or anything."
