FORKS, WASHINGTON: MARCH 2005

STUDENTS MOVED around her like the perpetual motion of the ocean, a rushing tide of water and Astrid the unmoving rock amongst them. She stood tall against the flood of bodies, determination keeping her in place and conviction driving her will. Astrid would not be deterred; she would be not sent away. She would be like the persistent fly buzzing around your head or the stain that never leaves your clothes. An annoying itch you couldn't reach to scratch. Fearful, though she may be, Astrid would remain stuck to her spot like glue, patient and waiting for Jasper Hale to appear.

And appear he did, parting the sea of students like Moses parted the red sea. It was as if Jasper Hale was a gravitational force that everyone must orbit around. They didn't want to but were left no choice in the face of this shining sun. Astrid wondered how she had never noticed the affect he had on those around him, maybe she just didn't care or more likely she just never looked hard enough. Time stopped at Jasper's presence, the clock no longer ticked, and the hands stood still. No one stood in their way, but there was an ocean between that neither Astrid nor Jasper dare cross. They settled for staring intently at other, daring the other to make the first move. It was clear Jasper knew Astrid knew and was waiting for her to prove it.
