Evelyn Erendale - A New Beginning [ON HOLD]

Chapter Three

Recap :-

Evelyn's father suffers the loss of his wife and to overcome it, he tries to understand his wife's last words and fulfill them which leads him to a cave in a hidden part of the forest.

CHAPTER THREE

He took in his surroundings noticing gigantic cobwebs from the ground to the ceiling of another part of the cave. He saw a dim light in the distance and decided to follow it and maybe somehow, get out the cave.

He tore through the cobwebs, they were sticky and disgusting but it didn't bother him much.
Walking further, he stepped into a pool of water. No, it wasn't a pool but actually an underground stream of water. It looked like it stretched for miles into the darkness of the cave.

He trudged his steps carefully through the water, feeling a bit eerie.
On reaching the light, he saw that it wasn't just some light but it was a crystal of some sort. A purple, cuboidal object and sharp at its edges. It looked enchanting.

For some reason, he just couldn't resist touching it and when he did, the floor beneath him shook. Only a slight tremor and then everything stood still. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

All of a sudden, a loud voice booms from the other side of the enclosed cave.

"You can only touch it once you answer my riddles correctly and if and only if you answer my riddle correctly, you shall be free to leave this cave. If otherwise, then I shall let you decide your fate.", the loud, unrecognizable voice commanded.

He tried to take a closer look and was curious to know from where the voice originated and from whom.

On reaching the owner of the voice, he felt his heart in throat.

A gigantic creature with the body of a lion, the chest and the wings of a bird and the head of a man.

He swallowed the lump that had been there in his throat and gathered up a teeny bit of courage to confront the creature.

"What are you? Tell me!", he ordered the beast, pretending to be courageous but inside, he was too scared to even think properly.

"I? I am the Great Sphinx*! I originate from Anatolia and as of this moment, I am the one who decides whether you leave this cave alive or remain here forever!" the beast bellowed angrily.

"What do you want from me?", he asked the beast almost on the verge of breaking down.

"The correct answer to my infamous riddle. An answer which decides your fate.", the beast replied slyly emphasizing on the latter.

"What is it? The riddle?" he asked.

"What goes on four legs at dawn, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?" 

"Umm..", he was lost in a medley of thoughts trying to find the right answer.

"Come on, I don't have all day. I'm hungry and I give you only five minutes. If I don't get an answer, you will be my meal no matter what your answer is.", the beast told the man grinning evilly.

The man started pacing about the cave while keeping his distance away from the creature.

What could it be?

It sounded so simple yet, I can't put my mind on that particular word.

"What goes on four legs at dawn, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?"

"Two more minutes.", the beast reminded him.

The man continued the same process, pacing up and about the cave, lost in a medley of thoughts.

"One minute left. I'm getting quite hungry already.", the beast confessed slyly.

Frustrated, the man blurted, " Alright, how about a cat?"

"Are you asking me or answering my question?", the beast looked annoyed.

"Fine. The answer is cat.", the man said giving up.

"Well...

Boom! Another one.

I guess I'm annoying you all. Haha I'm sorry but I'll be done with them soon.

I did some research on this chapter.
* The Sphinx is somehow a next of kin of Echidna. They're all a part of Greek Mythologies.

I edited it like, maybe 20 times I think but I don't think it was enough.
