CHAPTER TWO

'Wonika's doll, attic's fourth drawer, red brick.'
'Wonika's doll, attic's fourth drawer, red brick.'
The words kept on running throught his mind. He hurriedly gave Evelyn to Mr. Abbot and told him to take care of her while he was gone with the excuse to complete his wife's last wish. Instead, he knew that there was a secret.

A secret that he should know.

He stopped a cab and gave him with the directions to their building. Once he reached the apartment, he stopped for a while to catch his breath. He fiddled with the keys nervously while trying to unlock the door.

He knew what Wonika's doll meant. His wife had an aunt whose name was Wonika. She had gifted them a weird looking doll for their wedding saying that it would bring good luck to them for countless number of years.

He went to his and his wife's room and searched their wardrobe for doll, but to no avail. Then he pulled open all the drawers, nothing helped. Suddenly he found that the fifth drawer was stuck, not only stuck but actually locked.

Now he didn't know where to look for its key since he and his wife never opted for privacy and locks for things around the house. Then he remembered the other words that his wife had said. 'Wonika's doll, attic's fourth drawer, red brick.'

He pulled down the ladder to the attic and climbed up. It was a small, conjusted place. All things cluttered up everywhere. No one had ever been up here before except his wife when she did her spring cleaning.

He entered the attic and looked around for a set of drawers. He reached the end and saw a pair of fluffy angel wings adorned on a glittery black trash bag. The trash bag was covering something, so he tugged on it and it let loose, showing a set of five colorful drawers.

'Wonika's doll, attic's fourth drawer, red brick.'

So he pulled open the fourth drawer and it was a diary, colorful with the embossed initials 'PS'. They were the initials of his wife. He took out the diary from the drawer and beneath it was golden, gem - crusted key that matched the keyhole of the locked drawer in the wardrobe.

Taking the key, he went back down and to his room. He unlocked the drawer. In it was a weird - looking map, a twig from a deciduous tree, some sprigs of dried - out paisley and in the corner was Wonika's doll.

He took all the things from the drawer and placed them on the bed alongside the diary. He didn't know what to do now.
After staring at all the stuff lying on the bed, he decided to take a look at the map.

The map had criss - crosses drawn all over in different colors. He then tried deciphering it by comparing it with their town's map.

Both the maps looked the same except for the weird criss - crosses all over. He shoved all the things into a carry bag and headed down to the car parking in the basement of the buliding.

Once he was in the car, he started the engine and started following the criss - crosses on the map, particularly the one marked in blue. It looked like an off - road course with huge trees on either side.

He carried on driving until the road came to an end. He got out off the car and looked around. Nothing seemed to look out of the blue. He kept circling the trees around his car and then came upon a hidden entrance to a cave.

The cave looked deserted. He entered the slowly and silently. It was dark inside so he switched on his cellphone flashlight.

He turned the light towards the walls and saw writings, writing he couldn't understand. Then on a certain wall, a string of words were inscribed.
Beside it was a enormous drawing of Echidna*.

His wife used to study these creatures but he knew that they never existed and were just myths. However, the drawing looked really old.

He understood the words since they were written in Latin and he was a Latin major.

The words translated to 'On the next night after her sixteenth birthday when white roses bloom, she will find out who she truly is. Her powers will reign in the path she chooses them to reign. True love shall bring them danger. Pour forth, her army shall reign and only with greatness.'

It sounded all gibberish which made it difficult to connect to. He didn't understand who was the 'she' in the saying.

"Oh no, Evelyn!"

"But how...I mean she couldn't have known it was a girl and what is all this supposed to even mean?"

He took a picture of the words on the wall and proceeded to enter further into the cave when suddenly, the ground beneath him gave way.

********************************

*Echidna (Greek mythology) is the mother of the most famous and fearsome of Greek monsters.

Cliffhanger again! I'm not doing it on purpose okay. It just adds to the suspense of this story.
