CHAPTER ONE

"I think my water just broke", were the last words she said until she fell unconscious on the marble floor.

"Oh crap!", the man shouted and carried her up in his hands just like he had carried her at their wedding except this time, she was a tad bit heavier.

He kicked his neighbors' doors as it was his only way to ask for help. Mr. Abbot understood what was going on, got his keys and hurried them down to his van.

The man set his wife down in the backseat of the van and sat down next to her and holding her head up. He kept rubbing her hands and feet trying to bring her back to consciousness but to no avail.

They reached the hospital and explained the situation to one of nurses nearby. Soon, helpers brought out a stretcher near the van. They then set down the woman on the stretcher and hurried back into the hospital.

After all the arrangements were done, they began the surgery. They were going to do a C - section to get the baby out since the woman was still unconscious.

The surgery went on for about an hour and a half while the man stood outside pacing to and fro impatiently and Mr. Abbot comforting the man, telling him that everything would be alright.

After a few more minutes, a nurse came out holding a tiny and adorable human, wrapped in a pink blanket. "It's a girl, Mr. Erendale. Go on, hold her.", she handed over the baby to the man. "And the surprising part is, she never cried at all.", the nurse added with a smile and went back into the room where his wife was.

The man held the baby in his hands and smiled. She had lovely blue eyes with specks of green, she giggled and touched his face with her tiny hands, giggling again. Three hours later, he took her into the room where his wife was lying down, awake. She looked up and saw the two of them and smiled.

"Hey darling. It's a girl!", the man exclaimed to his wife.

"She's beautiful. Oh, she has your nose, honey.", she told him with a weak smile.

"And your eyes, beautiful. What shall we name her?"

"I thought about it all those eight months. How about Evelyn?"

"Oh darling, it's wonderful! Evelyn Erendale. It has a nice ring to it too.", said the man excitedly.

"After this, we'll both show her to the nursery we made for her, together
Okay honey?", the man said.

He waited a while, but no answer. He looked to his wife and her face had turned dark red. Then suddenly a loud beeping noise emits from the heart - monitoring machine.

From that while, everything sprung into chaos. Doctors and nurses rushed in. He heard one of the doctors shout, "She's seizing, get me two cc's of....". He zoned out. He was worried and in shock. He didn't know what to do. All he could think was, 'she was okay all this while, smiling too. Oh no, I can't lose her.'

A nurse shook him out of his shock and told him that he had to leave the room.

He left but his feet were walking on their own. He sat down on one of the chairs outside the room and waited, waited impatiently. Mr. Abbot came and sat next to the man and asked him what had happened. All he could say was, "She....she...seizing...I...II..".

"Okay, calm down. Everything will be fine. Nothing will happen to her, you understand. She's strong. You have to be strong too.", Mr. Abbot told him.

About twenty minutes later, the doctor came out of the room looking flustered.

"Doctor, how is she?", the man asked, worried.

"I'm sorry. We couldn't save her. She had a severe case of postpartum eclampsia. However, she told me to tell you this, right before her last breath, 'Wonika's doll, attic's fourth drawer, red brick.' I'm sorry for your loss, Mr. Erendale."

With that, the doctor walked away.

The man understood the words. He knew his wife wanted to tell him something and he had to find out what that something was.
