Summary: Ravenclaw!Mute!Reader runs into Mattheo Riddle.
The corridors of Hogwarts were always bustling with students, the chatter echoing off the stone walls. Y/n walked carefully through the crowd, balancing a pile of books in her arms, her mind lost in thought. She wasn't one to draw attention to herself; her quiet nature suited the books she so often buried herself in.
As she rounded a corner, however, her world was suddenly shaken. A body collided with hers, sending her books flying in every direction. She stumbled but regained her footing quickly, her face flushed with embarrassment. She bent down to gather her books, her gaze flickering briefly to the person who had crashed into her.
It was Mattheo Riddle.
"Sorry!" he said quickly, looking at her with wide eyes. But before he could say anything more, Y/n had already turned away, gathering her things in silence, and walked off without a word.
Mattheo blinked, confused. She hadn't even said anything. Most people would have apologized or at least given him a glare. But not her. He frowned, feeling a little put off by her lack of response, and watched as she disappeared down the hall.
Later that day, Mattheo found himself at the common room, sitting with his best friend, Lorenzo Berkshire, near the crackling fire. He was still thinking about the strange encounter earlier.
"Lorenzo, do you know Y/n?" Mattheo asked, his voice a little frustrated. "The Ravenclaw girl who always keeps to herself?"
Lorenzo looked up from his book, raising an eyebrow. "Yeah, I know who you mean. Quiet, always reading or scribbling something. Why?"
"She—well, she didn't apologize after I ran into her today. I was trying to be nice and—" Mattheo paused, running a hand through his hair. "I don't know, it just felt... off."
Lorenzo frowned, leaning back in his chair. "Oh, I see. You don't know, do you?"
"Know what?" Mattheo raised an eyebrow, curious.
"She's mute, mate. Doesn't speak. Never has. That's probably why she didn't say anything."
Mattheo's expression softened, guilt creeping into his chest. "Mute?" he repeated quietly. "I had no idea."
Lorenzo nodded. "Yeah, not many do. She's quiet for a reason, though. People think she's just shy or standoffish, but it's more than that. You should know, though. It might explain why she didn't react the way you expected."
Mattheo sat back, feeling a mix of embarrassment and confusion. He had completely misjudged her.
Later that day, Mattheo found himself seeking out Luna Lovegood in the library. She was sitting in a corner, her blond hair falling around her face as she flipped through a book on magical creatures.
"Luna," Mattheo called softly, hesitant.
Luna looked up, her bright blue eyes sparkling with her usual gentle curiosity. "Mattheo, what brings you here? You look a bit lost."
He shifted uncomfortably. "I need your help. It's about Y/n. I... didn't realize she couldn't speak. I feel like an idiot now."
Luna's face softened, her expression kind. "You don't have to feel bad. Most people don't realize. Y/n doesn't mind the misunderstanding, but it does make things harder sometimes."
Mattheo bit his lip, looking down at his feet. "I want to understand her better. I was hoping... could you teach me sign language?"
Luna's eyes lit up with a smile. "Of course! I've been teaching her a little here and there, but I'd be happy to show you. It's a beautiful way to communicate."
The next few days were filled with Mattheo learning basic signs from Luna. He picked it up quickly, the silent movements of his hands making him feel more connected to the world around him. It was both calming and exhilarating to learn a new way to communicate.
One morning, in Potions class, Mattheo saw Y/n sitting at her usual desk, lost in her work. With a deep breath, he approached her. He wasn't sure how this would go, but he was determined to try.
"Hey, Y/n," he said softly, his voice tentative.
She looked up at him, her gaze sharp and calculating, but there was a quiet curiosity in her eyes.
Mattheo smiled nervously, then signed, "Hello, how are you today?"
Y/n blinked in surprise. The sign was simple, but it spoke volumes. Her lips parted slightly, a flicker of recognition crossing her face. She raised her hands, signing back, "I'm good, thank you."
Mattheo's heart leapt in his chest. They had just communicated without a single word. His smile grew.
"Would you like to work together on the potion today?" he asked, signing the question carefully.
Y/n's eyes softened. She gave a slight nod, her fingers moving swiftly as she signed, "Yes."
As the days went by, Mattheo and Y/n began to have more and more short conversations, with Mattheo learning more sign language from Luna. He found himself looking forward to their interactions, enjoying the quiet and peaceful way they connected.
One evening, after a long day of classes, Mattheo caught up with Y/n outside the library. She was standing by a stone pillar, seemingly lost in thought, her hands moving lightly as if she were signing to herself.
He approached her slowly, feeling his heart race. This felt important.
"Y/n," he began, his voice steady but soft, "I've been wanting to ask you something, but... I think I need to say it in the right way."
Y/n looked up at him, a soft smile tugging at her lips as if she already knew what was coming.
Mattheo took a deep breath and then, with a nervous but determined look, signed, "Would you be my girlfriend?"
Y/n's eyes widened in surprise, and then her smile grew, brighter than anything he had ever seen. She signed back, "Yes, I would like that very much."
Mattheo's heart soared. The way they communicated, without words, felt like they were in their own world—a silent understanding, deeper than anything he had imagined. He took her hand, and for the first time in his life, he felt truly understood.
And maybe, just maybe, the quiet was exactly where they were meant to be.

FanfictionI will be putting warnings in all chapters, what house you are in, etc. I really am trying to make the plots good but I'm not very good at grammar. If I get an idea from a creator I will tag them. I change between "I" and "you" in different chapters...
