The dungeons of Hogwarts were eerily quiet that night. The faint drip of water from an unseen source echoed through the stone corridors, and the flickering torchlight seemed to stretch the shadows longer, darker. You sat across from Mattheo Riddle, his dark, brooding eyes locked on yours. It felt as though time had stopped, as if the castle itself held its breath, waiting for one of you to speak.

But neither of you did.

The silence was deafening, heavy with all the words left unsaid, all the broken promises and bitter accusations. His jaw was clenched, his hands resting tensely on the table between you. You hated him—or at least, you wanted to. But despite the resentment curling in your chest, there was something deeper.

A pull.

An ache.

A truth neither of you could admit.

How had it come to this? Once, you had been inseparable, bound by laughter and trust. Now, you were barely holding the fragile threads of your connection together.

And the question lingered: was there anything left to save?

Chapter 1: The Beginning

The first time you met Mattheo Riddle, it was on the first day of your third year at Hogwarts. A transfer student, he arrived with an aura of mystery that had the entire school whispering. The surname alone was enough to send ripples of unease through the corridors.

But you saw something different.

You first encountered him during a Potions lesson. Professor Slughorn had paired the two of you together, and though he spoke little, you couldn't ignore the way his sharp intellect shone through. While others were intimidated by his name, you found yourself intrigued. He was quiet but observant, his comments cutting but insightful.

It wasn't until a few weeks later, during a late-night run-in by the Black Lake, that you truly connected. You had been stargazing, hoping to clear your mind after a particularly difficult day, when he appeared, a cigarette between his fingers and a troubled look on his face.

"You're not supposed to be out here," he said, his voice low and teasing.

"Neither are you," you retorted, eyeing him curiously.

He smirked, and for the first time, you saw a glimmer of something warm beneath his icy exterior. That night, the two of you stayed up talking—about the stars, about Hogwarts, about everything and nothing.

From that point on, your paths seemed to intertwine. You began sneaking out together, exploring hidden corners of the castle and whispering secrets under the cover of darkness. He showed you sides of Hogwarts you never knew existed, and you, in turn, became his confidant.

One night, as you sat together on the Astronomy Tower, he finally opened up. "You're the only person who doesn't look at me like I'm his shadow," he said, his voice barely audible.

"Whose shadow?" you asked, even though you already knew.

He hesitated, his gaze fixed on the horizon. "My father's."

Your heart ached for him then, and you reached out, brushing your hand against his. "I don't see your father," you told him. "I see you. Just you."

He looked at you then, really looked at you, as if trying to memorize your face. And from that moment on, the bond between you deepened.
