Words: 918

The soft glow of the moon lit the Hogwarts grounds as you and Mattheo strolled along the lake. It was one of the rare nights you had together, away from prying eyes and judgmental whispers. You cherished these moments, even if they came with the constant ache of being a secret.

"You've been quiet," Mattheo said, his deep voice breaking the silence.

You glanced at him, your hands stuffed into the pockets of your robe to keep from reaching for his. "Just thinking."

"About what?"

"About us," you admitted softly.

His jaw tightened, but he said nothing. It was always the same when you brought up the reality of your relationship. The shadow of secrecy hung over everything, and the thought of him losing his Slytherin status kept him from ever giving you more.

Before he could respond, the crunch of footsteps and the sound of laughter filled the air.

"Riddle!" Theo Nott's voice rang out, followed by a chorus of greetings from Pansy, Astoria, Blaise, Enzo, Daphne, Draco, and Mattheo's brother, Tom.

Mattheo stiffened beside you as his friends approached.

Theo's sharp gaze landed on you, a flicker of curiosity crossing his features. "Why are you hanging out with a Hufflepuff, Mattheo?"

The words hung in the air, heavy and accusatory. Your heart pounded, hope and dread warring in your chest as you waited for Mattheo to respond.

"She's just my partner for a project," he said, his tone casual, detached.

The words sliced through you like a dagger. Just a partner. After everything-the late-night talks, the stolen kisses, the whispered promises-you were reduced to a meaningless excuse.

"Oh," Theo said, raising an eyebrow. "That's good. Because there's this girl in Ravenclaw who's been asking about you. Wants to go on a date." He smirked. "Should I tell her you're interested?"

You held your breath, silently pleading for Mattheo to say no.

Instead, he shrugged. "Sure."

The world seemed to stop. You felt as though the ground had been ripped out from under you.

"Really?" Pansy interjected, her voice laced with disbelief. "You'd go on a date with some random Ravenclaw?"

Mattheo nodded, brushing it off like it meant nothing.

Your vision blurred with unshed tears as the group stared at him, clearly stunned. They exchanged glances, and though you didn't understand why, their expressions seemed almost... disappointed.

"I have to go," you muttered, your voice cracking. Without waiting for a response, you turned and walked away, the lump in your throat threatening to choke you.

Later That Night

You sat on the edge of your bed, staring blankly at the floor. A knock at your door broke the silence, and when you looked up, Mattheo stood in the doorway, his usual confidence replaced with hesitation.

"I need your help," he said, holding a tie in his hand.

"For what?" you asked, your voice cold.

"For the date," he admitted, avoiding your eyes.

The dam broke. You stood, your hands trembling. "You want me to help you get ready for a date with someone else?"

"It's not like that, Y/N," he said quickly, but you shook your head.

"No. It is like that, Mattheo. You're so scared of what people will think that you're willing to throw me away. Do you even love me?"

He froze, his dark eyes wide.

"That's what I thought," you said, your voice breaking. "If you can't admit it, then we're done."

"Y/N-"

"No." You stepped around him, tears streaming down your face. "I can't do this anymore."

As you fled the Slytherin dungeons, you nearly ran into Pansy and Theo.

"Y/N," Pansy said, her voice soft. "Wait."

"What do you want?" you asked, wiping at your tears.

"We know," Theo said.

You blinked, confused. "Know what?"

"That you and Mattheo have been dating," Pansy explained. "We've known for a while."

Your heart clenched. "Then why... why would you-"

"We were trying to get him to admit how he feels about you," Theo interrupted. "He's in love with you, Y/N. He just doesn't know how to say it."

You laughed bitterly. "Doesn't seem like it."

"He's scared," Pansy said gently. "But he's miserable without you. You've made him better, even if he doesn't realize it yet."

You hesitated, their words stirring something inside you. Could you give him one last chance?

Mattheo's Dorm

When you opened the door, Mattheo was sitting on the edge of his bed, the tie crumpled in his hands. He looked up, and the vulnerability in his eyes broke you all over again.

"Y/N," he said, standing.

"Do you love me?" you asked, your voice trembling.

He stepped closer, his hands shaking as he cupped your face. "I've loved you since the first time you called me out for being a cocky git. I'm sorry I hurt you. I'm sorry I let my fear ruin what we have. But I love you, Y/N. I love you more than anything."

Tears spilled down your cheeks as you leaned into his touch. "Then stop hiding me."

"I will," he promised. "No more secrets. No more lies. I'm yours, and I don't care who knows it."

For the first time in weeks, you believed him. And as he kissed you, slow and desperate, you knew he meant it.
